I know for a fact that a new battery needs to run through the computer recognition for my 2007 x3. I had this done only a few weeks ago. If this step is omitted the computer will not recognize the battery as new and electrical fault codes may show up. This was confirmed by two mechanics I tend to trust. I can't imagine a 2005 model being very different in this aspect.
