I have no idea about the US boot space measurement but in Europe the boot space is reduced to 450 liters from 550 liters. That is of course measured up to the hight where the rear seat ends, if I’ve mistaken, so the “air” space is still the same so definitely not half the cargo.

Tanks size in europe is 50 liters(13.2 gallons?).

In Europe many governments have incentives to buy electric/hybrid cars and for corporate cars you pay less tax, which makes it more attractive to buy. Mine is a corporate car and of course the incentives/taxation was a significant part of my decision to buy a hybrid.
