Devil's advocate - when hitting that area with a direct volume of water, be it driving during a heavy rain event or spraying with a pressure washer while cleaning, it seems that there would be greater opportunity for water to find its way to the outside of the air filter. Maybe there are enough corners to turn that it's a non issue?

I wonder also if adding a scoop like this will lead to higher accumulation of dirt / grit / debris in the bottom of the airbox, and ultimately more of the same stuck to the outboard side of the filter?
For sure I will monitor. Our OEM in take box has a drain hole in the bottom and also a pressurized spring gate. I wonder if that opens to remove unwanted things. I will monitor also for dirt and such.

To me its not different than running an RK intake without a filter cover.

Another reason I plan to stick with stock filter vs K&N etc as they dont filter as much dust to allow more flow.
