I was initially considering a JB4 piggyback tune but after I discovered that I can’t remove the speed limiter or use the bolt-on mods fully, I figured BM3 would be the best. Do you have any experience with either tune?

Also, I was thinking of getting a backup/second ECU DME to clone my original OEM ECU DME. Then I would bench unlock the backup ECU and use that primarily. Then swap the ECUs whenever I need to get maintenance done at the dealership. I read that dealerships will flash the ECU which will lock it again during maintenance services and I don’t want to pay to get it bench unlocked every time I service my vehicle. Are my concerns valid? Is there a better way to do this?

Another reason I wanted to keep my ECU DME pristine is that I want to protect the resale value as I plan to work my way up to a X3M and then a X5M later on. I love the B58 engine for its reliability but jumping through all these hoops to get the DME unlocked seems like a lot of work compared to pre-2020 model years.

Thank you again!
For my tuned F80 I just told my service adviser to not flash the car. Normal maintenance does not require it. Some repairs, however, require a module flash, in which case ISTA will update all modules, including the DME.

As with other posters above, don’t mod if resale is a concern and you are planning on going X3M any way. Just save all the money towards a down payment on the X3M.
