2007 BMW X3 3.0si

Howdy folks. I was driving through my apartment parking lot and stopped to let a car pull out of a parking space in front of me. When I wanted to continue I stepped on the accelerator and it didn't move. The engine was running but the car wouldn't move, either forward or in reverse. The engine would rev just fine but nothing. The transmission selector slid back and forth and the only time it felt like the shifter was connecting was when it went into neutral. I had gotten a 4x4 warning light a couple of days before. There was no noise of grinding gears or anything. It just stopped moving. The car has 92000 miles on it. Any ideas on what happened and if the repair will cost more than the car is worth? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
