The 48v system recaptures energy if the vehicle is coasting at highway speeds (say, downhill) or rolling to a stop at much slower speeds. I notice my G82 engine regularly shuts off as I roll to a stop sign <12 mph (or thereabouts). Compared to our previous G05 X5 (12v system), the stop/start operation is noticeably smoother.
