It's not that. Older keys would be active 24x7, and enterprising thieves would bring some kind of box near your home, somehow record the key, and use the recorded key to enter/start the car. It seems to be more common in Europe than the US, but I'm not sure about that.
With the new keys, the keys become inactive after a few minutes, and so thieves can no longer use the old method.
