Question about VIN numbers and service - XBimmers

I have a friend who is looking at a used 2011 X3 but would like a more detailed report of the service than the dealer is giving him.

Is there a site (paid or unpaid) that one can put in a VIN number and see a bit of what service has been done to a car?

http://bmwvin.com/ seems to give pretty accurate and free information.

Give it a try, otherwise there are several paid sites, just google BMW VIN search.

That will only give you the options list of the vehicle. For service history that has to be requested by the owner. Unless your friend's with a service advisor at BMW I think it would be hard to get ahold of.
