'12 X3 28i Brief Observations

Greetings all,

This past weekend I took my '13 X3 35i MSport in for warranty work. The left rear window regulator appears to be on the fritz. The window does not index all the way up in the closed position. I understand this is a known issue with the X3...
This is my 4th brand new Bimmer in over twenty years. Each Bimmer has had some electronic glitch which required a trip to the dealer for warranty work. I suppose I'm a glutton for punishment.
To the point, I was given a 28i as a loaner vehicle, and I gotta tell ya, this SAV is fast. It is much faster than I expected. It holds gears longer than my 35i, and it also revs higher and longer in each gear than my 35i.
I was just amazed how fast this SAV is. It also handled very well!
In essence, I had to question the extra cost premium for a 35i over a 28i.
Pound for pound, a basic (non-sport model) 28i is a better value than a base model 35i.
It is only when you option a 28i with the MSport package, et al, that the 35i MSport starts making sense, b/c the moonroof and xenon headlights among a few other options, are standard in a 35i.
So, in conclusion, I have a new found respect for the X3 28i(s).

At the base, or fully loaded, the 28i is a better value. Anything in the middle the 35i makes sense.

I know I'll get flamed for it, but I think the 35i is just a waste of money and gas. To each his own. I love my wife's 28i.

Oh and that 35mpg+ in eco pro is fantastic

35mpg+ ?? How are you getting that? Using race fuel?

this is why we got the x28i . my wife could care less for the 1 second difference frm 0-60, and we chose to spend the money on options we wanted.

and although one could get 35 mpg hwy driving only at 55 mph, getting abot 30 mpg at 70 mph is more realistic. this is what we get on ours if we travel in the hwy at 65-70 mph.

that 8speed auto is wonderful in being able to close the performance gap between the N52 and N55 considerably more than people would expect.

This is our first BMW. My wife and I have owned a lot of the major car brands (GM, VW, Nissan, Subaru, Ford, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz). When we are looking for a new vehicle we pick what fits our current need.

We were looking for a commuter vehicle that was practical but fun to drive. The X3 28i fit the bill perfectly. To be honest we started out looking at the 2012 28i inline six because of its bulletproof reliability. However, because we live at a higher altitude, the naturally aspirated inline six was at a big disadvantage. We actually drove all three models including the 35i. Don’t get me wrong the 35i is incredible on acceleration and puts a huge smile on your face. We just could not justify the extra cost with the features we wanted and the price breaks we were getting. Again our goal was a fun to drive commuter car for my wife. Bottom-line I love the little N20 motor. I am so surprised how quickly you get to 3 digits on the speedometer and you don’t even notice it. I am so impressed with the handling of the X3 regardless of the motor you pick. We are currently getting ~26mpg in comfort mode with mixed driving (actually heavier on city). I am crossing my fingers that the 4 cylinder will be a reliable configuration.

Drove over three mountain passes today and really was satisfied with my 3.5i - mileage for over 500 miles was 26.4 including time in Vancouver and crossing the boarder. The ability to cruise up the passes in 8th gear helped the mileage - I used eco pro mode untill the twisties then sport mode (fun fun fun). No problems with decision to go with the 3.5i...

I have a 28 without eco pro. I wouldnt call it fast but it is quick. What i do find is that there is no flat spots in acceleration. It seems to unwind at the same tempo up to and over 100. I had a volvo turbo in the day and it was a dragster up to about 40 and then pooped out for the rest of the rise to whatever speed I wanted.
I am curious as to the gas mileage. I am not on the highway a lot but the best I get is about 25 driving to school which is mixed and on the highway about 27. maybe that is because i dont have eco pro but I do watch it and who does 55? I cruise about 70.
