Winter tyres on existing wheels - XBimmers

Does anyone just buy the tyres and put them on existing wheels. My local tyre dealer would swap them each season for Â£15 a wheel.

I did and have before. Put the Pirelli Sotto Zero IIs on the OEM wheels now that they're available in the proper size.

I have changed tyres previously but wanted to keep my X3 wheels clean and away from winter salt so bought some previous generation X5 wheels off ebay for winter.

The local tyre fitting centre charged me £25 to change all 4 last year.

BMW charge £30 to change all 4 wheels if you buy winter wheels and tyres from them. I put them in the back and then store them myself but I they charge £30 to store.

I thought I read somewhere that there are issues / difficulties with removing run flat tyres (i.e. they get weakened or damaged when they are removed) but I can't find the post now so that may be BS.

The other consideration is damage to alloys caused by switching the tyres every time

i think they charge more than 30 quid to store as otherwise i would have gone for it.. think it was closer to 100..

It's £30 but only if you buy the tyres from them:

Both valid reasons, I certainly wouldn't want RFTs on and off the rims, (it can be quite brutal) simply for the fitting risks and costs.

Tyres have a very small cost penalty long term, as you are only using one set at a time and rubber will last longer. Rims have value secondhand, so that isn't really dead money either. But mounting, balance, etc., is around £10 per wheel (or more) in most tyre shops, so with two changes a year, around £80 to £120. That is dead money.

No storage option here. That influenced me quite a bit. The wheels with tires were a bear to move around.

Would people still have the same fear about their RFT on /off if it was just a summer tyre being replaced due to a flat? Same deal really. Can't see the issue myself. I've had my OEM also changed to winter tyres.

That's a great idea, but you could always plasti dip your wheels which you could peel after the winter season is done. Saves you from buying a set of rims :P

Cost like 30$ in total :P

It's not really the same though is it? If you replace an old or damaged tyre, you are replacing it with a brand new tyre that hasn't already been used and then forced off a wheel. The concern is over the damage done to a tyre that you intend to use again, when you take it off.

The alloys are also at more risk of being damaged too because every one has at least 2 changes every year, rather than say 1 change every 2 years

Surely tyre manufacturers would put some warning on the tyres telling people there is a risk of doing this. Right? Right???
