Crunching sound from dash area.
Could possibly post some pics, but come on guys...open the bonnet, its straight forward, press the plastic panel next to the windscreen wipers and you can hear the creaking noise, then follow my instructions. If they are not clear enough will post pictures soon.

Creaking noise from dash area.
Driven my X3 now for over 100 miles and three days and over rough Northumbrian country roads.........CREAK free, great to get back into the X3 I love.
Open the bonnet and fix this problem it is very straight forward. I will put more instructions on this forum if needed. Pics might take longer. Its a very simple fix for peace and quiet. |

Mine went into the dealership for this, they didn't manage to resolve it - they just added some padding to the A-frame area's on both sides which is strange as I told them the sound was not coming from the inside of the car.
Anyway I'll give the solution mentioned in this thread a go at the weekend (hopefully there will be some photos by then to clarify). |

Perhaps this is a dumb question, but any issue with adding foam where you are referring to? I looked at it - seems fairly close to a lot of heat, albeit w/ plastic in between.

No the problem lies wear two plastic covers touch each other so no problem with heat. I could push down on the top plastic shield and hear the noise and after my quick fix it was gone It needs a piece of eg..foam on both brackets. BD

OK so I've found out from another forum member that there are actually 3 steps (I initally only found 2) so I'll give this another go at the weekend and hopefully be more successful.

Sorry for the delay, but I was completely snowed under with work (and I am self-employed, so can't turn it away !!)
Pictures now as promised. I have "re-fixed" mine this morning because the dealer fix started to fail. It took 10 minutes and a test run has verified this has worked. Step 1 (pic 1) - remove the rubber seal like so and keep in a safe place. Step 2 (pic 2) - unscrew the black screws holding the centre trim piece in place - there are two, one at each end. Step 3 (pic 3) - ease out the centre trim piece. You will see two arms (one at either side again) and you will also see where the top trim has a ramp pointing down that meets the centre trim piece when it is in place. It is this contact that makes the noise. You will see on my picture on the ramp pointing down the teflon tape that the dealer used and how this is starting to come loose. I have gone the other way and covered the arms of the centre trim piece with sticky-back felt. Step 4 - push the centre piece back in, screw in place and replace the rubber seal. Step 5 - enjoy the creak free ride |

Creaking noise.
Hi Again,
I see JD-Daddy-O, has pictures available now so will not put mine on at the moment unless they are requested as they are similar to his. Please remember there are 3 steps, either side and one in the middle. I fixed my X3 by insulating only the outside steps, but some may be caused by the middle step. Good luck guys and hope you all have the same success as me .... getting rid of that noise. B Don. |

Same here. The foam didn't fix the rattle, and it has gotten louder. However, I suspect it may have gotten louder since the weather has gotten pretty cold the past few days (well, cold enough for FL anyway). Also, now that I'm able to hear it better, I think it may be coming from driver side A-pillar or around that area. In any case, since it rattles more consitently now, I'm thinking of taking it in to the dealer. Hopefully it doesn't stop as soon as I get there.

I found out mine was also coming from the location where we have already now seen some pictures - when opening the hood and just pressing on the plastic below the windscreen it was easy to hear. Before I got the chance to do something by my self, I had a small stone hitting the windscreen. I went to the appointed repair shop, both my self and they thought it was easy to repair, but after an examination they said the small crass in the glass was too big to repair and a new windscreen was needed. They changed the wind scree and by this operation they had to take all the mentioned plastic parts apart - and guess what: after assembling again the rattling have disappeared :thump: A cupel of days after there were however a new rattle bt this time it came from the A-pillar, but after pressing on it quite hard it disappeared again. Now after two weeks and +3500 km (a long drive to Denmark and back again) there is still no rattles at all - I am very happy now |

Just fiddling around positioning with the full width rubber strip which comes into contact with the bonnet / hood seems to have cured mine, possibly just temporarily but it's been ok for 2 weeks so far.

Clive - Could you elaborate a bit more on what you did with the strip?
