Maintance conundrum
So I have 25000 miles on my 2012 MSport X3 and i'd like to keep it until at least 100k Miles. So, i am thinking about a few different scenarios on what to do about the maintenance after the 5 yrs/40k maintenance..
1.) buy $1500 extended maintenance and $1500 extended warranty to 100k miles 2.) roll the dice on warranty, buy the maintenance extension 3.) buy nothing and maintain myself to 100k I've done my own oil changes on all my cars from my first 2003 vw jetta to 2003 CPO 330i to 2012 diesel vw golf so I'm no stranger to being under a car. Ive done brakes, all filter fuel and oil. As someone with some experience I know having the right tools for the job is essential. So I guess it really comes down to whether I'm going to end up spending 2k in tools (ecu cables, brake reset tools, etc) to perform full maintenance to get me to 100k miles or not. |

The free maintenance plan is actually 4 years or 50,000 miles. I would go with the extended warranty over the maintenace warranty of the two.

I also went with the extended plans - I put 16K on my 2013 X3 in 6 months...

h0mersimps0n, if you are handy with cars, skip the maintenance contract and go with just the extended warranty. If you are buying the BMW extended warranty, I would buy it just before the 4 year factory runs out, just in case something happens to your car or you simply chnage your mind. Most after market warranty can be bought at anytime.

Here is my own personal experience with my 2 current BWMs, both of which are now past the 100,000 mile mark. I did not have an extended warranty or extended maintenance on either car and had all service performed at the BMW dealer:
2006 330xi: between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, I incurred $3,140.00 of costs that would have otherwise been covered under the extended maintenance plan. Unfortunately I never took advantage of brake repairs during the initial warranty period, so that was a lot of the expense. Other than rims and tires, which were a considerable expense until I swapped out of run-flats, the only "warranty" repair I would have had ran me about $800.00. So the extended maintenance would have been worth it, the warranty, not worth it. 2008 X5: between 50,000 and 100,000 miles, I incurred $2,940.00 of costs that would have otherwise been covered under the extended maintenance plan. Spark plugs, brakes twice and other incidentals added up. I incurred $2,400.00 of uncovered repairs during that time, although it would have been $3,700.00 if BWM had not covered another $1,400 repair that I complained about. So for the X5, both plans would have been worth it. I am about to trade the X5 in for a 2014 X3. My thinking now is to buy the maintenance plan and skip the warranty. I figure it is almost a given that the maintenance costs will meet or, more likely, exceed the plan cost, while the warranty is more of a crap shoot. By the way, I noticed the plan costs you cite above are considerably lower than the posted prices I see online. While I am aware you can negotiate these down, is $1,500 a common negotiated price? When I paid to extend my warranty on my 2003 CPO 330i in 2006 it only cost me $1500 so I was hoping that would be the ballpark for my 2012 x3... I feel that if I pay only for the maintenance (which I heard also from others and proved with my 2003 that one brake job makes it worth it) then the stealership will love crawling under the car for oil and plugging it into the computer to find stuff that "would've been covered if you had a warranty" ? Even with a warranty they loved sticking me with the $50 deductible for something every single time I brought it in for maintenance. Despite the great replies no one has commented on the expense of specialized tools required for maintenance? To properly change my fuel filter on my 2012 vw golf TDI I had to buy the $300 vcds cable to prime the pumps... But that and a set of torq wrenches and I'm set for life on my TDI's maintenance (minus serpentine belt) Quote:

I am guessing the BMW 7/100 extended warranty for a F25 will be closer to $3000.
