I believe the thread title "legitimate news sources" is a reference to a phrase from a post I made, where I stated that the "mainstream" news sources were mostly unified in their reporting, whereas Fox is the lone source for cable news tailored to the right.

Of course, there's a huge and fundamental difference between a news channel that makes an occasional (and in the rarest case intentional) gaffe, and one that was conceived by it's creator (Roger Ailes) to favor ameliorating the right and entertaining vs reporting the news. Fox is intentionally dishonest every day, and Ailes is the first to admit it. It's also common knowledge that the "news" reporting on Fox (as opposed to opinion shows) is pre-scripted with talking points, keywords, and clear agendas.

I'm not saying that "mainstream media" isn't fed by a controlled, agendized news feed, but the mainstream as a whole is not complicitly creating "The Truman Show".

Any rational human who can watch MSNBC and not come away with the impression that it is a DNC (Left end of spectrum) outlet is just not paying attention. They are overt apologists for the current administration and even more obvious in their attempt to spike any Republican. The worst possible of the many hacks out there. But I do watch, just to make sure I know what's being said.

Fox's popularity is reflective of the center-right to right leaning of this nation. Proof is in the ratings.

I should also clarify that, while Dan Rather going on Letterman after 9/11 and saying "They hate us because they're jealous of our freedom" was fanning the flames of ignorance regarding America's role in the world, I didn't see anyone from Faux News countering with the truth about us being political adversaries with much of the world, or about the consequences of being the world's police. Instead, they were launching their own racially, ethnically, and religiously based red herrings.

Yes, even for me, Ed Shultz is too much, and Rachel Maddow is close behind, followed by Lawrence Odonnell. However, none of them holds a candle to the sheer nuttiness of Glenn Beck.

But I'll have to disagree with you about the ratings; Fox news gets all the right-wing ratings, they're the only game in town. For comparison, you'd have to add all the other networks and cable channels together.

And I also have to question your right-leaning nation theory, since Obama's victory was much more decisive than either of Bush's.

I'm no shrink, but based on the comments on these boards, there seems to be some validity to the science presented herein.

Perhaps trying to have a discussion about this stuff is a big waste of time after all. Regardless of the quality of the argument, no matter what is said, those on opposing sides of the aisle will find it almost impossible to even begrudgingly admit that the other argument has even the smallest shred of merit to it, much less be convinced to change their mind.

If you'd bother to look, you'd see that each of these links are merely presenting content; in the case of the last link, it's a segment from The Daily Show where Jon Stewart is quoting Politifact. The other links are either quoting Politifact, Factcheck.org, or (and this is the best one) Fox News. Yes, one of the links presents a compilation of Fox News issued apologies. But you've already made up your mind, right?

It's one thing to put up with the spoonfed bullshit on Fox News, because you idealogically agree with their stance, but it's another to deny the bullshit entirely. It's like the people who don't realize that Stephen Colbert is being sarcastic.

I think adults can distinguish between news reporting and entertainment, and determine how much of The Today Show, This Week, The View, or World News Tonight is the former or the latter. However, many are just looking for confirmation of their already-fixed beliefs.
