This is my 1st thread at the forum!

My old ML320 (2001) must be replaced. I have decided to buy the new X3 2.0 w/ the auto 8-gear shift. I choose the 2-liter engine for tax reasons (I rejected the options of Audi Q5 2.0 and Subaru Forester 2.0).
The dillema that I face is the following:
Petrol or diesel engine
I don't have any experience w/ the diesel engines and the X3 w/ the petrol engine is 5K cheeper.

Do you have any suggestions?

Fuels not getting any cheaper in the EU.... go Diesel. my 2.0d MSport is a blast and still 500 miles on a tank.

In the typical lifetime of a new car ownership from new (around 4-5 years), I don't see how you can use up the differential between the cost of Petrol and diesel to the tune of 5000 euro. Even if you keep it longer 5000 Euro is simply huge to use up in normal driving.

How is diesel quality in Greece? If it's up to the standard, then the diesel is the way to go.
I'm coming from the ML320 W163 myself, and power wise you won't miss the 3.2 V6 from the Merc. The X3 felt much more agile and punchier despite the 2.0 I4 configuration.
The diesel quality is not that great here, but BMW has approved them to be used on their modern diesel engines (maybe some light modification has been done? not sure), but I'm not worrying too much. If I have the option of twinpower 2.0L I might consider it just because of the diesel quality, engine wise the diesel is better IMO.

If you only do 'average' miles the petrol is likely to be better value, recovering €5,000 in fuel takes a long time and the petrol engine is usually cheaper to service?

In few months, the price of the diesel will be equal to petrol price (tax reasons). Now it's 10-15cents cheeper. Usually, I do 18-20.000 km/year. If the diesel engine consumes 2lt less per 100km, that means that a period of 5 to 6 years is needed to cover the amount of 5.000E. I do not have a clue for the service cost.

my 2.0d manuel gearbox consume about 6,7l Diesel on 100km.
If i had a 2.0i it will be about 9-10l
I will always take the Diesel,even when the price off Gasoline is at a lower price

What a nifty tool, my diesel pricing is 0.09 euro cheaper than petrol it would take me almost 10 years to get that 5k euro and the 20i has a better 0-62 speed than the 5.7 Hemi Jeep Grand Cherokee
