Expected times from 'Order Documented' to Production Started for 2012 X3s in US?
Hi all, just ordered my 2012 X3 xDrive28i. Have a production number and can see it now on the bmwusa.com site but it's in the 'Order Documented' state which just shows me the color and model without my options, and more importantly, no dates yet for production schedule.
Has anyone on this forum recently ordered one that could share how long I should expect it to stay in this state before I get a projected delivery date? Any experiences would be appreciated. Thanks! - Murray |

We're in the same boat. Order was placed Saturday and we've been in the "ordered documented status" since then. Our SA tells us we're in a "112" status which really doesn't help our anticipation challenge too much.

<sigh> Purgatory
The first stage and the second-to-the-last ("Finishing Touches") are the most frustrating. Since the car can be in those states for a while.
For example, "Finishing Touches" basically means the car is done and waiting to be shipped. It could wait on a truck for days while the driver tries to fill his trailer. By the same token, it could be your's is the one he's waiting on as it rolls off the assembly line directly onto the truck and they start rolling. I get the feeling stage 0 is the same. However, if you speak with your SA, they can get a more definitive stage, like a sub-stage, and can tell you what it means. One good thing I heard was that if there are no Owner-Builds in front of you, they will bump your order in front of the Dealer-Builds. If that makes sense.

my dealer also confirmed this, he said all their orders (minus 1 or 2) are dealer spec 28i's on order and they would swap my 35i custom order for those at the front of the line, all he could tell me was that October production was for sure...

My order took 2 weeks to change from "order documented" to "production begins" at first I was not able to see my options, once my X3 started production my options appeared on my bmwusa.com account.
Good luck..

Mine went really fast. It was only a few days to go from "documented" to production begins. A few days after that, it said "finishing touches", and I got the production video. I placed the order on 9/26, and the car was finished on or about 10/7. (PCD pickup is 11/8!)

As an update, my order took 15 days to go from "Order Documented" to "Production Begins". Would really like to be able to do Performance Center Delivery before Thanksgiving. Will call my dealer tomorrow to see what the odds of that are.

I placed my order on the 16th and it switched from "order documented" to "in production" on the web site this morning (25th). So nine days. Yay! Note that 12 hours after the bmwusa.com status changed to "in production", the phone line still says there is no scheduled production date.
Mako: You should probably talk to your dealer ASAP if the status page has the wrong color! The dealer might have entered the wrong color code, but they may not be able to change it once production begins. The bmwusa.com tracking pages lists my colors and options correctly. |

Wait duration
As predicted by others on this forum, our X3 took exactly 14 days to go from "order documented" to "production begins." Our SA e-mailed us the good news on Monday evening and it took the web site about 12 hours to catch up. We're now hoping for an early November delivery here in northern VA.

So my order went in the system on Friday, October 21st in the afternoon.
My SA was off yesterday but just sent me my VIN and Production # this morning. My status shows Production Begins. So that's 5 calendar days or 3 working days from order documented to production begins. ![]() |

Here is my timeline:
9/23/11 - ordered car 10/18/11 - BMW Production Starts. 12:52 pm and receive vin# from CA 10/26/11 - Online notes "Finishing touches" and 800# notes "released to carrier awaiting transportation to a port of exit. Yeah!! Won't be long now...

It's not unusual for the color to be wrong prior to production. This usually just means that you got a dealer slot, and if you hadn't taken it they'd have built the color it shows. Can't hurt to confirm with your SA just to make sure (and if enough of us do that maybe they'll eventually fix the system--it's been this way since at least 2001).
