I am very interested in an X4 (or X3M). The keys for me are: price point; diesel engine availability. My wife has an X5d and we both love it. I have an X5, but once the kids are gone we won't need two big SAVs. Her X5d makes ~21 mpg in mostly city driving, while mine makes ~15mpg in mostly city driving.

I like the idea of an X4 though, I think it'll fit in quite well.

Any word on when this will be on the market?

just like a lot of BMWs, its for a very niche market. My wife for one! She loves the X6, but its too big, heavy, and expensive! now an X4 for around $55K loaded and she would be all over it. should still have enough trunk space for general usage, how many people constantly fill the X3 or X5 trunk to the brim anyway?

BUT this does beg the question, why the 3/4 series GT if you are going to have an X4? and what will be the price point, right in between the X3 and X5 which is pretty close already?

Guess BMW wants the strategy of capturing every segment and every $ they can, have $59K to spend, well a fully loaded X3 35i is ~$55K, and a X5 35i is ~$62K (with same options) so lets make a X4 to fit in there
This is an example of one customer who we will be targeting in relation to the X4. There is also a large market for pre-owned X6, what says that if they cannot stretch to an X6 there is always the X4?
(In Europe) They will offer the X4 with entry four cylinder diesel and petrol engines with the larger xDrive28i opening the door in the US.

Quote:
i'm still waiting for my 3 door SUV/SAV cabrio diesel M with Sdrive
it might sound far fetched now
but judging by the amount of models BMW is releasing, and how no stone is left unturned
it might not be impossible
Yes well the forthcoming Porsche Cajun is a 3dr to begin with as is the Range Rover Evoque - but that is more of a lower roofed SUV unlike the pure coupe offering of Porsche. If the Cajun is highly popular in it's 3dr configuration. Then BMW might press ahead with an Xcoupe as the idea has been with BMW ever since the 2001 Xcoupe concept car.

This rendering shows the potential appearance of the X4.

I would buy this! Only as an MSport 35i version or an X4M preferably with either manual or DCT. The X5 and X6 are too big for me. I am tired of the 3 series sedan/coupe, having owned many of them since 1995, but prefer the looks of the coupe styling, hence not interested in the X3.

I dunno... I still don't quite get the X6 or for that matter the 5 GT. In the case of the X6, take the size of the X5... raise the price... take away the practical value by removing the cargo area.... and voila! Don't get me wrong - based soley on appearance I have nothing against them. I had a traveling partner on a recent trip for about +/- 100 miles that was an X6M and I couldn't stop drooling... but, had I the budget, I'd buy the X5M. Same for X3(M) versus X4(M).

Variety is nice, but too much variety worries me because it dillutes the fleet and spreads the engineers and designers a bit thin. We'll see.

I agree Led Zep - I would take an X5 over an X6, an X3 over an X4, and the X3 i have parked in my garage over all of them, w/ the possible exception of an X3 or X5 diesel. The X3 is just the right size for me though,- and i like the space of the more classic SUV look compared to the coupe/hatchback. The X5 is a little big for my needs so i figured a gasoline X3 was a better option personally.

as a former e91 owner, i will be dissapointed if the 3 GT comes to America and the next 3 sportwagon does not. They already replaced the 5 wagon w/ the 5GT - and i don't see why they offer both that and the X6.

Oh wait, I guess the x1 would need to finally get to the US first...

sigh

Not a fan of the renders, not a fan of the x6 either...

I'm not keen on the X6 and likewise the X4 render. They just seem so pointless. I looked at an X5 3 years ago, I nearly went for it, I also looked at an X6 and thought "why on earth would I want an X5 with only 4 seats and lousy rear headroom". The X6 and X4 seem like something from a Mad Max movie.

We all have different needs and tastes so at least they add variety to the vehicles on out roads.

The X6 and the X4 both look cool. The X6 is HUGE so I can see people buying the X4 because it's a smaller version and a bit cheaper. They aren't that practical but they do give you a higher driving position, 4WD and more clearance for snow etc.

gimme

in a blink i'd trade mine for a smaller and tighter-handling version.

absolutely LOVE driving my X6 on the open road. i still can't walk away from it without sneaking an over-the-shoulder glance back...

i wouldn't mind the bulkiness at all if not for the one thing i'm surprised more people don't complain about:

THE TURNING RADIUS IS AWFUL.

41feet.

ugh.

i find myself making more 3 point turns than in ANY other car I've owned, even with side/top/rear cameras.

.

I've no problem with big cars, it does depend on how you define big though. Much bigger than the F25 starts to cause problems in the UK, some roads in villages can be tricky to drive down but my problem with the X4 / X6 is that they are wasteful of their size, not that they are big. Just personal....we all have our own opinions and requirements.

Just in the X Line alone BMW has more models then Porsche.. LOL.

X1, X3, X4, X5, X6...

Always curious to know how many 550GTs it would take to sell for the car to actually make money? The X4 is fantastic idea and I think it will sell in droves.

I have always thought the x6 was too big. So I think this is a good move. I wonder if it will "seem" smaller than an X3 being more coupe like. Its strange how an X6 seems way bigger than an X5. to me at least. Something about the lines or expecting it to be smaller till you get up close to it.

However, I'd much rather see the X1 come to the US over any other new models. Especially an X1 Diesel.

While it would be cool to see the X1, maybe even drive one, the X3 is just the right size for me - i got out of the 328 wagon because it was a little small - lacking in both cargo and back seat space. The X1 can't be that much different in size than a 328 e91. Has anyone outside North America seen an X1 and a 3 series wagon next to each other?

I think the X4 intrigues me more than the X1. If the X4 does in fact make it to production i would think it would be built in SC w/ the X3's so its more likely to make it to US roads as well - who knows if we'll see the X1 or not.

I'm happy w/ my X3......

Also previously had an E91. Great car, but our 110 lb. German Shepherd insisted we look into more room, so the X5 was obtained. Last I heard, BMW has reconsidered and the F30 variant (F31?) will be shipped here. Americans have developed a strange phobia about "wagons" in the past decade or so. It is a shame, in that they are often highly practical with the economy (almost) and handling of the sedan.
