Well, your method is all techy and impressive and stuff, but I usually just stick my head out the window and measure by how fast my lips are flapping (BPM, beats per minute as they slap together).

Yeah, maybe your way is more accurate now that I think about it. Plus you probably don't have numb lips when you get home.

Did you tried the hidden menu ? maybe there is something about the turbo.

You have to push the start button and the trip reset button simultaneously for a couple seconds(not pushing brake pedal)then ad the sum of the five last digits in the vin (like 5 if if you have 11111) and enter the sum in the right sub-menu.

I didnt try it.

The only things that come up are:

Main Menu

01 ID
02 System Test
03 Test End
04 Unlock

I can cycle through with the trip button, but nothing else changes anything.

BTW, to enter the sum of the last 5 digits, you have to use the trip button and press it x times

As you see I get the Main Menu. Do I then use the trip reset button x times(x=addition of VIN #'s)? If so do I have to be on any particular menu selection?

yes, press x times on any selection

For me I did:

1. Press and hold trip and start until "main menu" appeared
2. Press trip 4 times until '04 unlock' highlighted
3. Press and hold while on '04 unlock' until next menu shows
4. Next menu asks for a code
5. Press trip as many times as x (code will count up)
6 When you get to the right number do another press and hold on trip and multiple more menus appeared

Might have the words/description a little off, perhaps I should video it...

I did manage to add the "Service Menu" for CIC settings to the "Setting Menu" on the iDrive for Navigation, Telephone and Gracenote.

Now that some time has passed, what all things have you find in the secret menu and have you used it?

Anyway, as long as I was connected to the OBD-II system, I decided to see what WAS available on the X3.

The X3 uses the CAN 11-bit protocol.

Here is a list of the digital values that can be read in real time on a X3 35i using standard CAN queries:

average gallons per hour
run time (general)
distance (miles)
fuel level (reads to 0.1 gal.)
distance to empty (DTE miles)
time to empty (TTE hours:min)
average MPH (current trip)
average MPG (current trip)
fuel used (current trip)
average gallons/hour
run time (trip)
distance (trip)
distance on oil change
distance to service

There probably are others, but they likely require special BMW coding.

It is interesting and fun to drive around with a monitor connected showing some of those readings in real time. I just wish that the manifold pressure (turbo boost) reading was available.
