Is x3 a soccer mom car???
I have an m3 e93. Love it. Absolutely LOVE it. I got speed, I can go top down. Looks good etc. I live in NYC. Married just had a kid -3 months old. I need to get another car and sell my convertible. X3 has a lot of what I need but there is a stigma that I have that it's a soccer mom car or a car you get because you cannot afford a x5. Yes call me shallow, call me superficial, but f it.. We all are buying bmws here so if you flame me, whatever. I don't want to drive a cougar car- if it is perceived as such.
What you guys think? For 55k I can get a Japanese 4runner type or something like that. Can't wait to see the answers.

I don't have kids, but I have a dog, I camp, I cycle, I travel w/ stuff, and I need room. This thing is the rocket ship that I use to carry out these things with my wife.
For me? Absolutely not. Do people see it that way? I guess I really don't care. I do think the X5 is far further down that path though. |

I can buy any car that BMW makes with as many options as I want. I choose the X3 28i because it fit what I wanted in a car. Who cares what others may think. Buy what fits you, but maybe that means buying to impress others.

I also had a M3 recently, an E90 Sedan up until I sold last fall. I have gone to the X3 because of a lot of reasons: size (just right for my needs), power (35i), all-weather capability (something the M3 was not so good for), still fun to drive, good for long hiway runs, carrying capacity, etc, etc, etc.
Who cares what others think? Get what works for you, and ignore ppl who are shallow enough to label you by your car....meh....

Soccer moms are getting hip to the hop and driving all the hot cars!
But for real...the x5 fits the bill way more in my opinion...reeks of it actually. We could afford it, but I like the way the x3 looks and feels to drive.Last edited by MrsAdams2007; 04-20-2011 at 08:15 PM. |

I am a small car (coupe) fan but due to the Boston winter weather, I had no choice but to get a winter car. I am a Mercedes fan, but I have to admit that x3 definitely looks MUCH better and sexier than GLK350. I've never considered the X5 not because of the money, but because X5 is way too big for me.
I got my x3 about a month ago and am surprised how much I love it!! My partner is a M3 fan and we own two M3s, she loves the x3 as much as I do. =) My solution to you, keep the M as your toy car. Last edited by RMDoxie; 04-20-2011 at 08:49 PM. |

Practically all SUVs and minivans could be considered soccer mom cars so I'd say just drive whatever you like; plus most people posting in the X3 section seem to be guys. I don't think anyone's ever going to make fun of you for driving an X3 nor say you're too poor to buy an X5. If you think about it couldn't someone make fun of an X5 owner for being too poor to afford an X6 or a 5 series owner for a 7 series?
I'm not sure why you decided on a Toyota 4runner as an alternative. My sister has a 4th gen 4runner and it's inferior to the X3 in every way. The car gets 2-3 mpg less, less power, doesn't handle as well, has worse interior and exterior. The car also isn't in the same price range, you should compare the X3 with the Q5, GLK, or even the base Cayenne. |

Huh?
Why is this even an issue? I mean, you bough an m3 (not an m5 or m6) - were you concerned then that the m5 or m6 crowd was laughing behind your back that you went with the 3 cuz you were too poor to afford the bigger car?
Come on, how old are you, 16? A confident adult male would not even waste energy worrying about this "problem". Drive what suits you, f*** what others think. |

I've got an E90 M3 and I'll be picking up a X3 at the Performance Center in a couple of weeks. I'm not a soccer mom - I just need a vehicle that carries more stuff than the M3. The X3 is perfect for the car guy (or gal) that needs to carry stuff. Between the M3 and the X3, I won't need any other vehicle - I can cover all the bases with the two of them, and smile every time I drive.

My colleague tried to convince me to get an X5 instead (like him) because the X3 was a "woman's car." So I started paying attention to X5 drivers. Turns out they are mostly Moms. Not so sure about X3 drivers, as I don't see so many. But my new car will be fast as shit with black leather and sport seats, so my ego will be a-ok.
Also, I've lived in NYC and definitely wouldn't want a car that was any bigger than I absolutely needed. Still, I agree with others that you should buy what you like or you'll regret it.

![]() You've got me cleaning the screen from coffee stains now! ![]() Seriously, I would say 3 things: 1. The X3 was always perceived as a rugged car, more focused on performance than luxury -as such it would be the wrong stereotype for soccer moms. 2. MB GLK launched in Sex and the City but I still see more men than women driving it!? 3. Ultimately any car can be stereotyped. Who cares if you enjoy it. |

That thread is really funny
I thought the same about X3 until I drove it and convinced me that it wasn't the case.In our area, soccer mom often drive Volvo... That is what my wife wants next lol. To me that brand is really targeting women All BMW attacks more mens IMO. |
