Who's holding out for the i4 turbo?
With the switch over schedule I just read for the 28i to go I4 turbo this fall, who's holding out on getting an X3 till then? BTW is that switch over official or just speculation?
Just curious as I am now on the fence as to either wait for the I4 or just go ahead with the 35i now, but after reading about the N20 engine I'd really like to get an X3 that can get 30 mpg or better but maybe I'm just dreaming... |

For myself I just placed my order for a 2,8i and don’t regret waiting.
The current engine in the 2.8i has been around for a long time now and is a great engine. While the new 4 sounds great and a win-win, it is as yet unproven for reliability. I have already broken my “don’t buy a first year model” rule, but seeing that so many of the major components on the F25 have tried and true components and to-date there are so few reports of defects I decided to gamble. I’m most likely being overly cautious, but with a new engine platform I’d like to see a year or two of results before feeling comfortable ordering it. |

Although nothing is official I'm currently holding off for the 2012 model year and hoping the N20 will be an option. It sounds like next week BMW will preview the first US model(s) to have the N20. Speculation is the Z4 will be first. At least it will give us another data point to see how they are progressing in their switchover plans. It would be great if they had any news on the X3 but I'm not holding my breath on that.

Not so. Power is close to 28i, not 35i.

2012 X3 will have the N20 and the 3.0 will be history. More horsepower 241-245 verses 230 and much more torque and 16% improvement in gas milage. The gas milage would equate to 22 city and 29 highway if you use the X3 3.0 as the basis. It's supposed to be a little faster to 60 as well because more usable power from 1500-5000 rpm's and the obvious benefit of direct injection. If the X1 doesn't arrive late this fall I may switch my choice to X3 with N20.

I'm sure it won't be long before BMW turbos prove reliable but based on issues I've had with my N54 I'm planning to get a X3 28i before the switch to the N20. With the winters we have here, I don't want any added risk of my wife and kid (soon to be kids!) being stranded somewhere because of a fuel pump failure. Too bad really, the engine sounds like it'll be a treat!

Are the HPFP issues still happening even with their latest fix?

Hmmm.... that's a lot of weight to push around with a 4... doable for sure, but I love the N54/N55's. They are amazing workhorses. I'll go with the 35i and not look back. You shouldn't have to feel the turbo kick in every time there is an incline in the highway.

Not sure what the latest fix is, do you mean the change from the N54 to N55 engine? I haven't heard anyone complain about their X3 dying yet but I know some 1 series owners are saying that the pump on their N55 are failing. I'm sure BMW will get it fixed one of these days but in the mean time they've extended the warranty for the HPFP to 10 years or 120k miles.

The HPFP is the only issue I've heard about for the N55 engine in the 35i. The N55 uses the same inline 6 as the 28i and that engine's solid. The twinscrolled turbocharger is still much too new for anyone to know if there's a problem.

I ordered this year because I prefer the NA straight six to a turbo 4. As far as I'm concerned the six has the ideal combination of power, smoothness, and efficiency. I know my next car will probably be a four, but I wanted one more chance to have one of these wonderful motors. It's hard to imagine the BMW brand without an inline six cylinder engine as the workhorse of the fleet. They might as well replace the Roundel with another logo.
