Mandatory Nav option

I just read this on another board:

"Please be advised that due to the unfortunate incident in Japan, a shortage of supply of microchips has caused a mandatory option addition to several of our models until further notice."

Starting with May production, Option Code 609 (Navigation) or ZP2 (Premium Package 2) will be mandatory until further notice on the following models:
528i, 535i, 535xi

Starting with May production, Option Code 609 (Navigation) or ZTP (Technology Package) will be mandatory until further notice on the following models:

X3 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive35i"

Has anybody else been told this? So if I put my order in now (in April) but my X3 gets produced in May, does that force me to have to take the Nav. option or am I exempt from this since I placed the order in April?

Nobody has been able to confirm if this mandatory option will be at no charge or if buyers will be forced to pay.
If its going to be a free upgrade, im sure all those who paid for the 609 Navigation option will be unhappy

I doubt they'll give it as a free upgrade, but wouldn't that be nice! Guess we can dream...

Received an email from my dealer asking me to upgrade from 6nh to 6nk only. I have business nav! Upgrade is not free of charge.

I saw this also on another forum.
I hope it’s not true as bumping up the price by more than 2K is not something I’d like to do.

I'm beginning to wonder about this. Seems strange to make it required without offering a reason.

What I don't really get is why would they make the nav required? You'd think with the shortage of microchips that they'd want you to have less electronic parts in the car instead of more.

Does seem odd that it's this way round and not the other. It could be something like a shortage of a specific type of chipset that is needed for the smaller screen but not for the larger screen

That would be my guess.

It's also possible that there are other shortages affecting the number of cars they're able to build and that they've decided to include nav because it's a high-margin configuration ($2K for $50 of parts).

If true, as they still refuse to offer option 609 on it's own in the UK that means here you need to buy the entire pro package or delay your order if only 609 orders are available. Ouch! However, the brochure does say 609 is standard (which it is not) so maybe they have a psychic on their staff?

I have the pro sat nav on my order, if I understand this correctly, I should be okay if this mandatory option is true. Or have I got it wrong?

Yeah, you should be OK. It appears to only affect builds without pro nav. It's probably components linked to the smaller screen / smaller digital part of the dash

Just received email from my dealer after query re the mandatory sat nav option

BMW have said:

There is a temporary option restriction for BMW X3
(F25) - cannot really add anymore on this. Delivery lead times are not
effected though from any advised etc.

So looks as if there is an issue for UK too. This could get interesting once we know what it means. Anyone else have a reliable dealer who might look into this?

When my order was placed last Saturday, which included Nav, the CA mentioned only the Convenience Package as causing production delays. Probably the power tailgate option.

Certainly any such issues might impact the US first due to there being shorter wait periods than for us over the pond so less time to catch up. However, could be San Diego dealer simply did not know about it. Might be worth asking.

Just received a response from my CA on this issue. To paraphrase: They just received a bulletin this morning indicating there is a shortage of certain computer chips. In particular the cars affected are without certain "Premium 2 pkgs" and navigation. BMW is calling for a production delay through the end of May. He did not clarify what he meant by "Premium 2 pkgs" (Maybe he meant ZP2?) He mentioned nothing about a mandatory option. I guess if you want a car ASAP it becomes "mandatory". BTW isn't "Mandatory Option" kind of a oxymoron!

Oh yeah, He said I wasn't affected!

It's completely bizarre that they keep saying the only cars affected are ones without a certain option. Why can't they just say (for example) it affects the standard iDrive screen so if you get an upgraded screen to replace the delayed components needed for the standard screen, you won't be affected.

It's like going to a restaurant and being told there are no starters but if you order everything on the menu, you can have a starter. Hmmm, perhaps not, but hopefully you get the point!

Actually, I say it's bizarre but this is typical of BMW's smoke and mirrors when it comes to technology.

Accept our terms or cancel seems the new mantra re X3 as demand outstrips supply. Except smoke, mirrors and pointy sticks.

Further word filtering through of unspecified delays on all models (indeed brands) with emails expected in coming days. Sounded wide reaching and significant! Maybe not a surprise but disappointing. Do keep asking out there.
