Tires not for American market?

Has anyone else gotten an email like this one from BMWNA:

"The tires currently on your vehicle are not for the US market. We would like to arrange to have them replaced for you at your convenience."

Are the one for the "other" market better? Maybe I'll want to choose? The ones on my X3 are Pirelli Cinturato P7 245/55 R17 run flats.

The Cincuratos are V rated A/S RFT's with a wear rating of 400. Tire Rack sells the Cincuratos so something smells fishy. Make sure the replacements are equivilient or get really big bucks like thousands for the shorter life. My Tur** from Bridgestone were throw aways after 20K miles - check the 3 series posts on Runflats for details. I just returned from handing over a check for 50 BIG for my he new X3 and this is not good news.

Correction the specs above are for the Cincurato 245/50/18 that is seen on the 3.5 X3. Unfortunately the size you have are only rated at 260 for wear. The tyres are also summer performance not all seasons, which most likely is the reason BMW wants to trade them out.

Good idea--I looked online and this particular configuration is hard to find, clearly more available in Europe than US. But they are available, at about $1,000 for the 4. So I'm asking the BMW rep why the switch, and what they intend to replace them with. I'll report.

Replacements will be Pirelli Cinturato P7 A/S RFT 245/55 R17, retailing at about $100 more per tire than the ones on it. The explanation was that tires for the US market have an additional steel strip in them to deal with an electricity "issue" created by toll booths. Sounds kinda silly to me, but since the tires are essentially the same, I'm not going to fuss about it. Bad news someone pulled the wrong tires out of the bin; good news for quality control that someone figured it out I guess. And it sounds like a "one off" problem, the continuing strange saga of my X3. A friend gave me an "evil eye" charm for it....
