Accessories question
To all you X3ers who have had a chance to play with your new vehicle a while, can you weigh in on two accessories I've been looking at.
One, the moon roof wind deflector. I have had vehicles in the past where without this it was incredibly loud and a fair amount of drag on the vehicle at interstate speeds. How does the X3 do. Does anyone out there have it installed and can give a before and after. I pick up my X3 Friday from PCD and will be driving it home on the interstate so I'm sure I wil lfind out on day one if not sooner. Second accessory is the mud guards. I was at a dealership this weekend and saw a titanium silver X3 that had obviously been driving through some muck. The entrire lower side of the vehicle immediately behind both the front and rear tires had a fair amount of mud thrown on it. Has anyone installed mudflaps and do they help on the new body style of the X3 to reduce this. thanks |

I pre-ordered both these and so far am happy with them. Although I personally have not had a sunroof but the 328 we have seems loud so that is why I decided to go with the deflector. Also, have not had mud flaps before but hoped to protect the paint a bit better. I cannot testify in that regard yet since I have only had it since the 7th but like them so far. I have the cross members for the roof rails but not sure about them. The primary reason was for kayaks but don't think I shall risk that and am waiting on the trailer hitch which I was going to have it put on at the factory, but they do not install them yet.
Hope this helps. |

Are the cross rails, specific to the X3? I ask because I have cross rails and mountain bike holders for my current car (bmw 3 series touring) and hope to transfer them to my new X3, but am not sure if generic or not. Asked a dealer or two, and of course... they had no idea. Last edited by marmite; 02-23-2011 at 11:08 AM. |

Living in Florida I have had an opportunity to open the moon roof quite a few times and the built in wind deflector does work very well in minimizing noise and in reducing the wind impact within the vehicle. I would suggest trying it before you add a plastic wind deflector and change the appearance of the roof line.

Have done some highway driving with sunroof open. It's pretty quiet. I had mini Cooper with the same mesh windscreen though on the panoramic sunroof. It caught a lot of insects in the summer.

Hutt - have fun at PCD - I did it a couple of weeks ago. Make sure you beat the !@#$%^ out of the ones they let you drive on the track - tons of fun. When I was there they didn't have any X3s in the fleet so they had us drive X5s for the track part of the day. Factory tour is amazing - but they don't let you take any pics of it. Favorite part of the day was the post-lunch hot lap ride with the professional drivers - wow, amazing doesn't begin to describe it.

How have the mudflaps helped? Do they make a big difference? Anyone else have them. I am thinking about blowing half of my accessory gift card on them. Thanks! |
