In the context of Mercedes Benz becoming the luxury sales leader in the USA, BMW CEO stated that theres no reason for BMW to not be #1, and went so far as to say its impossible for an automaker to become the #1 sales leader without being #1 in the USA.

In the same vein, when introducing the X3 BMW AG CEO Harald Kruger expects the new X3 to outsell all of its competition. Along with this expectation was some kind of implicit threat. "We created that segment. The No. 1 approach and target I clearly have is, there shouldn't be anyone besides us who is No. 1," he said during the unveil of the BMW X3. "If somebody on my team is not performing to that, well, he has a problem."

Now his confidence in the X3 is not misplaced, the outgoing and aging F25 X3 has proved to offer a mix of features making it a reliable and long-lasting seller, even in the face of stiff and newer competition from other brands. If BMW has put the same effort into the new G01, then the future of the X3 should be a bright one.

To back all this up, BMW is making sure to increase the volume of cars available to the US market which is hungry for X3s. It will accomplish that by bringing new plants in China and South Africa online to produce the X3, when the original South Carolina plant is included in the list, that means 3 global plants will be producing X3s.

...or else what?

2011 brought us the F25 as a segment leader only to fall behind in less then 3 years. Sure the G01 X3 may become number 1...but it won't last long.

If you want to blame someone...start at the top.

It will never happen; decreased residuals, interest rates are increasing, thus increased MF, loss of MSD for those who used them. The F25 sales lead was when leases were very cheap and subsidized by BMWNA/BMWFS with inflated residuals, with the amount of lease returns coming into the CPO market, BMWNA had shifted the Center incentives to CPO. A similar equipped F25 to G01 will cost more due to interest rates increasing by the fed, and decreased residuals, there is a stronger job market now, but income has remained flat.

Bingo

Residuals and rates are no good right now. Leading to higher lease payments.

How do they expect to be number one when they're nickel and diming customers? Unless I'm missing something, competitors offer some safety features as standard while BMW still charges for them. I don't care if it's $500, $1,000, or $1,500, they're still charging for things that their competitors are including as standard options.

When everyone else had already included backup cameras standard, BMW was still charging for it on the new 5 series. That's just shitty business. And with the new tiered options, we won't be able to order the car exactly how we want them without adding other options or packages that we don't want/need. I think the new X3 is very nice and I'm somewhat interested. But for the reasons above, I'm a bit bitter towards them now after 20 years of being a fan.

Case in point, look at the Alfa Stelvio's. A Ti Sport, fully loaded, costs $53k before any incentives.

An X3 is going to be what? $60k+ similarly equipped?

It's really all about the residual lease rates. If BMW doesn't improve them, I think sales will be a little sluggish.

Or else BMW will be 2nd to Mercedes. And then maybe he will have to fire his crew.

Mercedes is committed to being by far the #1 luxury Auto Maker by 2020. And #1 luxury Battery Electric Vehicle [BEV] maker by 2025.

According to them...

The best or nothing!

The Alfa Romeo isn't BMW's competition for the #1 spot, Mercedes is. Alfa has to price the Stelvio aggressively, or it won't sell. They are fighting an uphill battle in the US.

Priceless! It's fine for BMW to sell 10:1 X3 vs X4 but touring has to be phase out because it's selling 1:10 vs the X3 very clever BMW!
