Drove over curb at 40-50 mph, :-(

I have to say that I am really stupid. I was driving about 40-50 mph the other night and didn't noticed the curb/island which splits the lane.

Right wheel hit and ran over the curb and I was quite scared. Fortunately X3 made a solid landing and nothing seems to be broken to my unaided eyes, not even a scratch. The car drives perfectly fine for the past few days and I didn't noticed any anomaly.

So should I have dealer inspected the car? What could go wrong if the car drives perfectly fine?

Just a little nervous that dealer might over claim or estimate the damage and charge big $$$$.

Thanks.

Gah... that sucks.... i guess there is no harm in getting a free estimate and have the dealer check if there is actually anything wrong with it =S... u don't have to go there and fix it i mean...

I'm surprised you didn't destroy the tire and wheel. I'd take it in, just to be safe

wow man that sucks...sorry to hear that...and hey it happens. I once backed a car into those 4 foot concrete poles that stop cars from backing into buildings...well they work!

Anyway...yea I'd totally have it brought in...if it was only 10-15 MPH I would not worry about it, but at that speed I'd take it in.

You didn't even get a flat or damage the wheel? Thats amazing

Possible results = bent rim, bubble in your run flats, alignment off, balance off.

Try to find a good straight smooth road where you can maintain various driving speeds but more importantly, where you can really "feel" the driving of your car. Drive on said road a few times at different speeds and see if the car pulls in any direction or vibrates at certain speeds. If the car does nothing and drives fine, I wouldn't worry too much. I banged our 330 into a median curb when turning left at a light at around 25-30. No harm was done.

Or just take it in to your dealer and have them check these things first.

Take it in to the dealer to have the tire & wheel inspected. The tire may have sustained some sidewall damage. Even if the car tracks straight, the wheel alignment should be checked. Slight alignment errors will result in eventual abnormal tire wear.

The X3 front suspension is very rugged, but a impact like can do some "not immediately apparent" damage. Don't take a chance with your safety!

I can't believe, if you hit a vertical kerb full on that you have no damage. I did the same with the wifes car (probaly 60 mph) and it cost USD 700 to fix, although I could drive home. The wheel and tire was OK but the supsension and steering were bent.

Just went to dealer this morning and they didn't find anything except some scuffs on the inside rim. The mechanic was a little surprised and he did quite some test drive to make sure, :-) What an amazing car!

BTW, I highly recommend JMK BMW if you are in central or northern part of NJ. The SA and mechanic are really nice and patient. They explained clearly about what they checked right under the jacked car. I actually learned quite a bit as they also explained how those components works under carriage.

In the end they only charged me $30, which was again a small surprise as their website says $135 for the inspection service.

Thanks for all your nice comments and wish you all have safe ride everyday.

Very wise having it checked out. Super lucky too - I would have expected this thread to be describing a blown tire and badly bent wheel at the least. Glad to hear everything is good.

It's likely the alloy may have a crack in it. On the rough roads of England, I know of a guy who cracked is alloy hitting a pothole in a 5 Series!
