Paint peeling off roof rails

Hi folks, just wondering if anyone else has experience of this paint fault on their car, or any idea why it would happen. The laquer has started peeling away from the leading edge of the passenger side roof rail (UK vehicle). Haven't used roof bars and only ever use BMW cleaning products and hand wash. Car is 2 year old Msport in Carbon Black. Will be taking to BMW for rectification under warranty but just wondered if an isolated issue, thanks.

BMW replaced all 4 alloys after warranty expired for our 2011 X3 as corrosion started on all 4 wheels, you should push for the same as any paint it's normally expected to be under 10 years warranty min this days, and problems only if body work was applied to the area in question following accidental damage. insist on getting BMW to fix this if no mod to the panel in question.

Never had any body work done to the car so hopefully there should be no issue at all with them fixing. Just a bit strange to happen in first place with no obvious reason. Interestingly, I also have 2 x corroded alloys (around the centre caps) which they have said they will replace. Hopefully get it all done at the same time. Thanks for your reply.

Ours was one of the 1st to hit Europe in 2011, and we had endless of issues, ABS Sensors the panoramic roof cover, alloys, transmission, speakers and the climate control … lost the number of times the car went in.
Due in this evening for another abs sensor while the car is also in for the isofix recall, I believe it is down to 1 weeks of production and the location too as we never had issues with our German produced BM including my current F10.
Never the less it is for sure a Friday afternoon car, not sure we can go back to an X car! Maybe F-Pace jag is the option forward.

Hi Speedbird1, I have exactly the same problem on my drivers side roof rail. I also have never used roof bars. My car has just turned 4 years old, but I would not expect this to happen. It would be interesting to know if the paint warranty would cover repair.

I have a similar problem, and haven't used the roof rack, but can't comment on prior owner. Warranty coverage would be great though!

Rails and rims are from suppliers. Suppliers had a problem - both rails and rims. BMW likely to take it on warranty, and charge suppliers.

Thanks for everyones' feedback - it will certainly be useful to point out to BMW that mine is not an isolated case. I will post an update with the solution once I've spoken to BMW.

The solution may be to replace them, which will require dropping the headliner.

The fawlty should be replaced - no need to replace both, since they- probably - are from different batches.

We have exactly the same issue on our 2-year-old MSport Carbon Black F25 - reported it to BMW about a month ago and they immediately said it would be replaced under warranty.

We had notification yesterday that the replacement part has arrived (apparently they come pre-painted) and my wife has booked it in for next week as that's the first date they have a loan car available

Snap - both rear wheels by any chance?

Same age car, same wheels, same problems....

Wonder if it was a batch issue for the rails and wheels?

Thanks PerryGunn - interesting, yes both rear wheels on mine too. Sounds like mine was right behind yours on the line ! . Good to hear BMW not quibbling about repair / replacement. I'll get mine booked in asap.

Yes, it was a batch issue - but different batches due to different suppliers.

Same issue here... driver's side (US vehicle), 2011 M Sport. Mine isnt as bad, only about an inch of the black has come off, started last year. Good to know I'm not the only one, I thought maybe I damaged it somehow but I've never used the rails.

Definitely appears to be a batch problem - I will update the post when I've spoken with BMW and they offer a solution, (which is looking like a replacement rail). Just not too happy about having to interfere with the interior but I guess if it's the only way. Thanks to all for your responses.

It went in yesterday for the replacement rear wheel (other side was replaced a few months ago) and roof rail and my wife's just been and picked it up - they asked to keep it for 2 days so they could do the ISOFIX welding at the same time (there's a recall out for this)

Nice job, you wouldn't know the headlining's been removed and refitted. As far as I can tell the the new rail is a good colour match to the rest of the car but it's raining lightly at the moment so difficult to be absolutely sure (although I'd be surprised if there was much difference with a factory-painted item)

Thanks Perrygunn - I really appreciate the update AND reassurance that the headlining will look untouched after the job. Likewise, my dealer has said they will do both affected wheels, roof rail and the ISOFIX recall at same time. Should be done in next couple of weeks. Hopefully mine will go as smoothly as yours. Thanks again.

Finally able to post an update. Slightly annoyed with dealer - despite assurances that all three warranty items would be dealt with at the same time (to inconvenience me as little as possible) in the end only the ISOFIX recall was completed on the day it was booked in. I then had to leave it an extra day to have the roof rail fitted (because they hadn't ordered one in !), and finally the wheels were not at the dealer. When I queried this they admitted they had only just ordered them and it would be another six weeks until they came in - so that will be yet another visit to the dealer - oh well at least the work they have done appears to be of a high standard. Roof lining is sound and no evidence of it having been dropped to fit the rail, which was my main concern. I'll add a final update when the wheels are fitted. Why can't dealers just do what they say they'll do ???? I specifically asked them not to call my car in until all three items could be attended to at the same time and they ASSURED me this would be the case ! Rant over - sorry just needed to vent.
