Break-in procedure
I'm picking up my 2011 xdrive28i this afternoon and downloaded the owners manual to check out a few things in advance and noticed the break-in procedure is simplified from what my prior BMW's had in their manuals.
It used to state not to maintain constant speeds in my 2008 and 2004 3 series vehicles, and the new X3 manual doesn't say that anymore. It just states limit full throttle use and transmission kick down downshifts, which were also in the prior manuals. Has BMW done something new with the piston rings or something, or did they realize most owners won't bother do what the manual states? |

We just picked ours up at the factory in Spartanburg, and the delivery specialist there told me the break in procedure is "for the first 1200 miles, under 100 mph and 4500 rpm". thats it... I read somewhere else that someone was cautioned against using cruise control for the first 1200 miles as well, which speaks to the constant speeds issue from before, but he never mentioned that to me

Just on general principles, avoid the cruise control only because you want to vary the engine speed on a new motor. But, I'm betting that with the precision in manufacturing these days, the real break-in is the first 100 miles. Just don't hammer it constantly to the limits. The drive home from PDC in SC is probably all the break-in needed.

Oil change frequency seems to offer two basic philosophical choices to go with:
1-BMW whose engineers designed the car and who run things like race cars; their vision may be clouded by their Design tools, test cars, sensors, and race performance analysis 2-the mechanic down the way who went to school with your best bud at work and has the inside scoop on the real maintenance tricks BMW is hiding from you because they secretly want all our cars to fail early so we'll rush out and buy new ones Hmmm, tough one. I'll go check with that gal who makes my lattes, she seems to have a line on some good dope . . .

I asked my dealer what the break-in period was a while ago, they told me there wasn't one on modern BMW's - "all the 'breaking in' is done at the factory".
But I guess the manual and comments here tell a different story.

When we first got the vehicle the notice on the display showed the oil needed to be changed at 15000 miles and shortly thereafter changed it to 13000 miles and I only had 500 or so miles on it at the time. Hmmm?
