Second Generation X1

Auto Express have a feature on the new X1 and it looks amazing! It would be interesting to see it alongside the X3 because they look very similar in size / shape.

I hope the next generation X3 is styled in a similar way - BMW will be on to a winner. Incidentally when is the next gen X3 due as my lease runs out early 2017 so will be looking to place an order mid 2016

There is another thread on the forum with videos of the new X1. It is in fact quite a bit smaller than an X3 and uses the front-wheel-drive architecture that underpins the 2-series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer people-movers sold in Europe, as well as BMW's third-generation Mini. Whereas the current X3 is based on a totally different architecture initially derived from the older 3 series.

Also on the forum I posted a link to a Welsh newspaper motoring correspondent review of the car that said it would only be sold in the UK as an expensive X1 xDrive25d. No petrols! If this is the case, in my view BMW are missing a trick here, but there again it is meant to compete against other manufactures smaller SUVs that are appearing everywhere and not against the larger X3.

One of the videos showed a guy loading a surfboard and it clearly showed his complete head was above the roofline of the new X1. This makes it relatively smaller than an X3 or the guy in the video is over 7 feet tall.

Interestingly, some time ago I carried out a youtube search and not many showed people with the new car and never in the same photo of the X3. Careful marketing I would say.

I disagree about the size with the OP.

Take a look at this picture and see where the rear seat headrest is compared to rear window. One's backhead would be almost leaning against the upper part of the rear window.

And if you want to see outside, you have to use the C-windows instead of the big B windows in the rear doors.

actually here is the review...

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/x1/...nd-bigger-boot

Now I look at the video, I agree with you now I run through it and watch the reviewer. It is taller than the old style X1, but not as tall as the current X3 or the proposed newer proposed 2017 X3.

By the way, the seats are not as thick and as deep as the current X3 and by looking at the positioning of the rear seats in the photo they are pushed to the rear giving more cabin space but shortening the rear cargo area.

I might even have a good look at one when replacing my current X3 in a few years time. Pity it is not possible because of the architecture to have a 6 cylinder engine in it. Still if the proposed for the UK 25d gives the power/torque/consumption it might be worthy from my point of view of consideration.

Another review from youtube. If you watch it all the way through it is quite informative.

I hope there will be a X2 coupe version, since I don`t need the luggage capacity in rear, and still think it is a bit boxy. I also hope there will be an e-AWD version.
I will also miss my petrol in-line six.

Current X2 renders seem promising!
