The battle rages on........
Just passed a white Audi Q5 SLine 2.0tdi....we exchanged glances and I adopted the smug look of someone who had picked the better car! Was very tempted to shout "how's your suspension/consumption/tax/lcd screen size!?", but I resisted.....

They're also much more common (particularly in white) but that is set to change!

Q5's a better looking car IMHO but the X3 beats it hands down on just about everything else. Even the interior in the X3 is superior and that's an area where Audi usually wins hands down.

Dunno about "wins", but it's a nice lookin' car. Could be that this isn't a zero sum game. They could both be good.

In the UK, I think Audi has become the new BMW; by this I mean that until recently, BMW drivers were considered 'knobs' (for non-UK residents, this is not a compliment). Now BMW actually seems to be the sensible choice, with Audi moving more to a 'chavvy' image. I know this is a sweeping generalisation and that there will be many exceptions, but just look at who sponsors the players/managers seats at Old Trafford....
This confirms 2 things: 1) By association with Man U, Audi have become the 'bimbo' of the premium car market, and will no doubt insist that all cars come with a years subscription to Heat/Hello magazine. 2) What kind of 'knobby' company sponsors premiership seats? And the seats are Recaro car seats for God's sake! I have owned 2 Audi A6's; Audi make good/great cars, but their PR has dumbed down and I can't associate with them anymore. Honestly, I really considered the Q5, and although I felt the X3 was the better car, the Audi image made me score it off the list early on......

Audi's recent marketing - going so far as to call out BMW by name, is pretty brash. It could easily backfire on them.

I like audis, and vw too. The Q5 was the vehicle I would have purchased if it wasn't for the X3. We should be thanking Audi for making the Q5 so good - I believe the Q5 being so good is a main reason the X3 is so good is due to the competition from Audi….something about Audi seems to bring the A game from BMW...

The new marketing can indeed very well backfire on Audi. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkjAp...eature=related Last edited by Beyu; 05-23-2011 at 10:53 AM.. |

Audi is doing very well world wide (especially in China), just not quite so in the U.S.
Audi contributes a ton of profit to the VW group. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...vw-models.html Q5 has been out for a couple of years. It promptly won the Car and Driver comparison. The new A6 and A7 seem to get a lot of positive reviews also. BMW has to watch out. In my book, the main advantage of Q5 over X3 - there's a spare tire.
