Smile Rear Bumper Protection

We are picking up our new 28i next week at the PCD. What solutions has anyone use to protect the rear bumper from the inevitable scrapes and scraches from loading and unloading in the cargo area? Thanks.

I had the clear-bra guy apply a strip of film to the top of the rear bumper.

Is clear bra able to withstand scratches from heavy loads?

There is a nice black rubber one on eBay for $47. I might get one soon.

I also applied a 6" strip of clear bra to the rear bumper. It will protect against 99% of scratches I would say. It is tough stuff. If you go that route, make sure the clear bra material covers the edge of the bumper too, not just the flat part.

There was one made of stainless steel exclusively for X3 and ships from Germany. Can some one locate it?

100% 3M clear bra. Great product and doesn't take away from the look.

It just ended yesterday. However, often they re-list. Search item number 130606199027 from seller zetaauto. He is currently posting one for X5's and will probably re-list some for X3's or you can probably contact him (or her) directly

I emailed the seller and they re-listedsee Item Id: 130707209445

Do wish I could find the stainless steel bumper protector. There is one listed for the X5 so they are out there. Cost is like 4X as much though.

www.zetaproducts.net. Their direct price is less than they ask on ebay. I bought three for three 2012 X3s. It is very easy to install and does the job as long as your cargo is not the full width of the opening. It is black like many BMW and other OEM step protectors.

Thanks for the link. I checked the direct website and eBay. Difference is that the eBay item has free shipping and from the Zeta Product's website it's $8.00 so ends up being a whole $1 more! Some people may be closer and have cheaper shipping however. Anyway, what-evs, it's only a $1 difference which doesn't do much these days. The bumper protector could save some money down the road though if it does it's job and prevents scratches, scrapes and whatnot.

FirstBimmer:

1st off, you are going to LOVE the PCD, did mine last month on my '13 X3 35, so enjoy!
Now, regarding the bumper: I got the rubber cargo area protector (we go to the beach a lot so sand is a fact of life!). The cargo system has a fold out rubber flap that covers the bumper for loading and unloading. This is a BMW accessory - got it at the dealer, can't recall the price, but not too bad (~ $100). Also included a much nicer Cargo Box than the one you will find in your car. There are dimples that match those in the cover so it stays put.

Enjoy the new toy!

Did the Performance Center Delivery yesterday. You're right it was a lot of fun. I wish we could have spent all day on the track.

I don't really like the cargo mat solution. I wanted something more passive for my wife when loading whatever. I am leaning toward the clear bra approach. I asked the staff at the performance center and they advised the clear bra.

I will echo other recommendations that if you can arrange it do the PCD!

"Clear Car Armor" is what I had done to front as in a bra and a strip for the rear bumper to protect from dog ramp. Turns out dog ramp doesn't touch bumper only make contact with metal bed. You don't even know the clear 3m product is there when it's clean. I originally was just going with rear bumper protection then talked into full front end including side mirrors and head lights, glad I did.

I went with the Avery Nano-Fusion after comparing it to the alternatives. It’s thinner and less visible than most other products plus it’s supposedly more durable than other products of the same thickness. My installer highly recommended this product over the others.

I had my X3 parked next to a coworker’s car that had the 3M protection. We both have protection that covers a portion of the hood. The 3M on his car was clearly more visible while the Nano-Fusion was not noticeable unless you were up close.

Had the entire rear bumper covered in one piece including the exposed cargo lip. Also, the entire front bumper, 24” of the hood, front of the mirrors, underside of the hood where the wipers strike when lifted up, door handle cups, wheel arches and rocker panels. The installer I used cut all the pieces free hand and did an impeccable job.

Thanks for finding this, been looking everywhere. Really want the OEM BMW Stainless steel but this may work vs. the rubber one on eBay. If I can hold my horses, going to England in October and can maybe get one there and bring back.

This rear bumper cover looks good. It should blend well with the X3.
