N20 Under-Rated?
I recently watched the head2head on the f30 vs the Ats, I was wondering why that guy said that the n20 was underrated and BMW loves to make up numbers, just to make the n55 owners feel better.
I did my research on various sites, it said that the n20 produces 270hp and 280tq at the crank. It kinda make sense that the n20 is just 0.5 secs shy away from the n55. What do you guys think?

Yep. 300hp/300tq is just a nice round number. The n55 seems to be just barely less underrated than the n54.
fwiw, the F30 335i is ~.9s faster to 60 than the F30 328i. X3 35i is ~1.1s faster to 60 than the 28i with the n20. |

Burger Tuning already has a stage 1 tune for the n20 out. Apparently they got the 328i under 5 seconds and it works for the X1. Emailed Terry and he said it should be very compatible with the X3 although they haven't gotten their hands on one yet. With the tune I think we could easily see the n20 X3 6 seconds or less.

I love my N20 so far....Nice and smooth, great torque for ed driving..Not as visceral as the S65 (M3) by any stretch, not as fast as N55 - but meets my needs beautifully in the x3. It's a marvelous little gem of a motor imo.
I will say the N20 is a bad pairing with the 5 series..Had a 528xi with N20 for a weekend, and it was quite "lazy" for lack of a better word..5'er just too heavy for the 4 pot.

Well, the sentiments are appreciated, but I don't know about the "best assessment" praise
I will just reiterate that I am most impressed by the smoothness and low end torque of this motor...The IL6 was the queen of smooth - but the N20 approaches that smoothness in only it's first generation! The counter-balancing and some of the other techniques BMW employed have made the N20 (at least) the equal of the VW/Audi 4 pots - which have had more time to evolve to boot. The 4 banger technology and ultimately the motor itself will continue to improve - for that we can be certain. Tip of the cap to BMW for a great, great first offering. The only area where I think they can improve, is not the motor - but the exhaust. The motor sounds like a little diesel. I personally find it endearing (I didn't buy it for a v8 roar) but I can see where others might like more of a growl note (ala 335)

Burger Tune is only $399. You are thinking of another company. http://burgertuning.com/N20_BMW_performance_Tuner.html |
