USB AND Bluetooth audio from iPhone suddenly not working

For the longest time, I've used the USB audio in my 2016 X3 with few problems. There were sometimes dropped connections, but nothing major.

Well, something really weird is happening. Whenever I connect my iPhone 6S E (running iOS 11.2.2) to the USB port, and start my favorite radio app (or any sound app)... the phone plays the music, not the car's audio system.

Yes, I can turn the music on and off from my phone's speaker by turning off the sound in the entertainment console (just pushing the button).

Huh?!?

I've seen posts here discuss using different cables. How on earth could that be the issue?

Bluetooth on the phone doesn't seem to connect for audio with the X3 either, though it does handle calls.

What should I try next? Software update?

The car is still under warranty, but I'd like to avoid the trip if possible. I can work remotely from the local dealership, but it's still a day out of the office.

In the meantime, I'll also be making a trip to the local Apple Store, to make sure my phone isn't the problem. (The Lightning port may be dodgy, since it does have some issues with a speaker dock of mine.)

Your dealership should have an "expert" who may know the best fix

And I found the most anti-climactic answer.

The iPhone itself had some problems with sound docks, so I thought it was the first point of failure to inspect. So I made a quick trip to the Apple Store and explained the issue.

The tech stopped me, took out a small tool, and cleaned about nine month's worth of pocket lint out of the Lightning port.

And then the phone worked perfectly.

So, yes, lint was the problem.

Something to think about, I guess.
