Overheating question
This has recently happened to me twice now. 2013 X3 3.5 x-drive with approx 85K.
A couple weeks ago I was driving on the highway and the car gave me a hot engine warning shortly after followed by a pull over and stop warning. Car cut the power and I had to pull over. I tried the old trick of turning on the heat on high but no hot air came out. I turned the car off, restarted and everything seemed fine. Hot air worked, no overheating warning and I went on my merry way. The whole time the engine temp gauge stayed below 250. The outside air was very cold that day. EXACT same thing just happened today. I've read several different things searching but nothing that matches exactly what happened to me. Anyone have a clue on this one? I'm taking her in tomorrow to an indy repair shop near me. Thanks- DW |

Sounds like an intermittently failing coolant pump. Pretty common with these cars around your mileage.

I had the same thing happen to my 2013 35i when driving on the highway, it turned out to be a failing water pump which I had replaced. There is a whole thread about it found here http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1219853

Sweet baby Jesus you have got to be kidding me. I just got this from the dealer a little over a month ago. Unreal. Anyone make an aftermarket water pump that's built better for replacement?

If it is the Water Pump then give some consideration to replacing the Thermostat Module at the same time. Both are expensive, but you may save some bucks on labor in the long run.

Got a low coolant light on my X3..turns out the expansion tank/cap were faulty. Fixed under CPO warranty (which is now done/over). pumps are THAT expensive to fix? sheesh.

The pump is tucked in behind the subframe. It was a messy job but i did it myself -- my cost was about 220.00 with a de-branded Bmw pump. $1900 is a little too much-- that is oil pan gasket territory.
