Head-up SCREEN, not HUD

The last option that i left behind was HUD and since getting a car felt sorry for not ticking that box ... Was coming from e60 where I did not really missed it, but a higher seating possition in F25 means loosing a road from a peripheral vision when checking speed etc. was waiting for a navdy solution, but came accross by accident to this BMW oem aftermarket solution -HUS - and got it installed this week and it is GREAT!

Definitely interesting, but at $600 it's a gadget I'm not willing to pick-up....

Could you possibly please post some pictures of the installation? One from directly from the driver's position and one each from either side at an angle of about 20 degrees.

Thanks

I will, later today. My own impressions it much less intrusive or visible in real life than on photos online, must be because pictures are focused on the thing.

Is it a gadget? If you want but did not get a HUD, that is an excellent opportunity and it cost half the price of the HUD. navigation app comes free and although i took it for speed indication only, navigation with speed limit indication, speed camera warnings and the navigation itself - is a really useful gadget. It cost the same as the one that will come from navdy, but it is an oem solution, which i prefer anyway.

Thanks. I look forward to seeing the pictures to help me with my deliberations.

Can you elaborate in the speedcam warnings and the rest of the read outs?

I have the BMW MEDIA/Pro Sat Nav fitted as standard to my X3 xDrive 30d M Sport but of course no speed camera warnings can be loaded, so I use a small Garmin SatNav that we do not use for guidance, but use only to give the speed camera positions that I subscribe to and get from http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Cameras

Camera warning comes as part of garmin hud navigation app. The HUS is connected directly to car for speed and other readings. For navigation and related functions it comes via navigation - you can either use navigation from your car or the free garmin app dowloaded to your phone. Thanks for taking the pictures and posting. You are very kind.

I am surprised at how small the screen is. Perhaps it is down to the distance the camera is from it. I can only presume that once the driver is seated in the car it is in fact quite large and displays the information so that it is easily readable.

The same day as my HUS installed, I was testdriving the new x5 with a HUD. In terms of the info displayed, HUS was nicer. The main disadvantage is that HUS is visible, but that basically it. And HUD is still about x2 the price.

How about the size of the display? Comparable?

I assumed, perhaps wrongly that the HUD is larger and the icons/text are correspondingly larger on the X5?

HUD is not larger, simply invisible HUS displayed info is the same size as on HUD

Now all I have to do is drive an X5 or X3 with HUD and then see a HUS in operation to compare and see if I want to go further.

one of the links above has an extensive write-up with photos, and youtube has some videos - it gives quite a good impression of how it looks IRL.

the other "+" of the HUD is that you can sligthly adjust the hight of where the info is displayed (but not by much), while on HUS it is fixed (but I do not see the need for adjusting it, as it is right in the correct spot - easily visible, no losing of road/traffic in peripherial vission while consulting HUS info.

Yes I did notice this. That is my only concern with the HUS. Both my wife and I sit very high up in the driver's seat and we might find it is a little on the low side. It [display] would not be hovering in our line of site but down towards the bonnet. Perhaps a very small amount of blue tack or something similar could be discreetly and strategically placed underneath the unit to raise its angle upwards?

What do you think?

The screen is nifty for sure and they cram a lot of info on the screen, but the display area does seem smaller than the HUD on my X3 (which I assume is the same as the X5). They also use thinner numbers and graphics it seems - but that being said, it looks like a lot more info is displayed in the smaller space (if indeed it is smaller) compared to my HUD. They make good use of the space they have on the HUS.

The reason why I am thinking the display is smaller is when I think of the HUD display showing highway exit graphics, it looks like it would take up half the screen. But this may just be how the camera is portraying depth. When I take a pic of my HUD, the graphics look a lot smaller than they do in real life.

Anyway, I think the HUS looks pretty cool and I like all the info it does give you.

Admittedly, I was not using a satnav while driving a test x5 so could not appreciate the full size of the HUD displaying max information fields on a windscreen, but the size of speed indications was the same in my recollection. HUD also had a bit of more "depth" in its perception. That might be the main visual difference.

I'm also quite tall (188 or 6'2), so my seating possition is quite high. However, is your seat is at max hight and you are really close to the wheel/windscreen, rhen neither HUD nor HUS would be in your direct field of vission I'm affraid. My HUS is mounted on a panel, not sure if you could possition it any higher (but again, I do not feel the need for any higher possitioning of a HUS.

For my next car I'm deffinetly geting an integrated solution (hud), but if you do not have and regret of not getting it, HUS is a perfect escape from such a situation. Im glad bmw thought about it and provided it in time
