What month will X3 2.8 switch to N20?

I was going to wait for an X1 to get the new N20 engine but since it won't arrive until the end of 2012 I may look at the X3 with the N20. What month does the 2012 X3 start production in October?

Sometime in 4th quarter.

Here is the N20 engine switchover schedule for all models - http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=478254

I seriously doubt BMW would have a 2012 model with the old engine and then switch it a couple months later!

If the N20 is going to be in the 2012 model expect it from the start, so September/October.

As far as the schedule, well that can change, and who knows if they are talking 4th quarter of their fiscal year or calendar year, big difference!

Unless anyone knows of an instance where BMW changed an engine 2-3 months into a model year?

we all said the same thing with the rear lights of the M3 sedan, with the LCI coming only a few months later. People were pretty bummed b/c their cars were already "out of date" after a few months even tho it was only out for a couple of months. An engine is a bigger deal yea, but the e90 went from a 330 to 335 in a year also which imo was a huge upgrade. so i think it's hard to predict.

I know this is an old bump but I had some thoughts as to why its listed as "4th Q"

5'er will switch in september 2011. That means that the new engine will be ready for mass production in september 2011. engines are likely assembled in Germany where the 5 series is assembled. So the engine will be where the car is.

The X3 is assembled in South Carolina. The engines have to get to the U.S., clear customs, and get ready to go in the X3. There may be some delay and they can't predict exactly when they will make the switchover.

That is my theory.

You might be right on but I bet all 28i for 2012 models will be i4 engines you will just have to wait a few extra months for it. Meanwhile dealers will try to unload any stock 2011 28i's

Plus we get the N20 in the X1 here in Canada already too.

BMW seems to have little regard for model year when it comes to switch-over time. They make the changes when they see fit.

I'm waiting for the N20 before I seriously consider an X3
