low mpg with my 2013 X3 28i
Hello:
my X3 has less than 120miles since I took delivery several days ago. The mpg seems disappointing at ~14.5. is this due to breaking in the car? any experience? thanks |

I never got it so low on my X3 2011. Whats your average speed shown by iDrive? May be 120 miles is too small a value to judge the average. Do you check the over all mpg or mpg for the trip?
My driving is maily in city and I get 26-28 mpg while going to office down the hill (350 feet) and 16-18 mpg while coming back home. My X3 has now 6500 miles. Last edited by April1; 05-17-2012 at 05:07 PM.. |

Try resetting the historic fuel economy in the iDrive
My car indicated 38L/100km when I picked it up. I guess the dealership had the car idling for an extended period for some reason. If that was the case with your car the average consumption would be all out of whack. |

It should increase significantly over time, assuming you don't drive like Mario Andretti. Try resetting the fuel economy readings and monitor your economy in real time.

Mine was also registering 18.4 mpg in the first couple thousand miles, I'm at 6K now and it's reading 20 mpg so it may have to do with the break in period or just the fact that it's only 120 miles. Don't worry and just give it some more time.

Mine started out at around 25 and has decreased over time and has been about 20+ for a number of months now. I have a mixture of city and highway and only about 5-6 miles to work. It was delivered 2/11.

Picked up my 2012 28i in mid April at Spartanburg.
During break in period averaging 20.5 mpg around town and 26 mpg on highway coming home (Chicago) from Spartanburg (driving as recommended by BMW). Now at 4000 miles and still getting almost 21 mpg around town and 26 on the highway with no where near economical driving habits. Using only 93 octane fuel. |

Definitely give it time. Keep in mind, short commutes in the city will yield much worse MPG. Sometimes if I go on a short run in the 35i I will see low teens. If I am out running around for a few hours the MPG comes up nicely though. Go for an hour drive out in the country and you'll see great numbers.

good mileage
Picked up my 28i 2013 last Monday and took it for a drive to Seward Alaska today. This includes a small mountain pass coming and going. Trip stats as follows: 4:52 hrs, 251mls 26.8 mpg average speed 52.7 that includes stops idling while I played with the Idrive and opening her up, at least I believe thats the way the trip computer does. Must have had 150 miles on it prior to the trip and didn't take it over 4500 rpm except on rare occasion by mistake. She ran cool and smooth. Arround town it was giving me 19-21 mpg and I have been in and out of sport mode and plenty of idling.
28i Jet Black, Oyster, Sport Activity, Premium, Connivence, Winter, and cargo net. |

Use Eco pro as much as possible. I have 1500 mi on my 2013 and live in upstate new York where it is VERY hilly. Mostly all highway driving, but even so, with Eco pro turned on after getting to cruising speed I averaged over 25 mpg on my last tank.

after resetting the gauge still getting ~15 on the second tank. I think with an extended drive the number would go up. expecting a trip to verify this on memorial day weekend. |

At April1,
Eco pro is something that is new for 2013. It, along with the auto start/ stop feature, are all part of their Efficient Dynamics engineering. From what I can figure out and from driving the car, I believe it actually remaps the ecu. It really is like a separate tune in the engine, but instead for increasing throttle response and air and fuel rations, it decreases them. It also limits things that put more strain on the engine, like how hard the A/C will blow for instance. It does all this to make the car run more efficiently. It's all pretty technical and typically German overengineered. Effectively, it all but completely castrates the engine. If you turn this on in stop and go traffic, regardless of what they say, I'm sure you'll do more damage than good. The engine simply works too hard in such a restricted fashion. There is a HUUUUGE lag in the engine when taking off from a stop in this mode. I never touch it until I'm at least going 55. However, when at cruising speed the power that is needed to maintain that speed is more than adequate. With it turned on you can actually see how many miles your "adding" to your current tank of fuel. It's not an enormous gain but it's not nothing either. Hope this helps. |

I am looking forward to trying EcoPro (probably just on freeway) and getting better mileage than my 09 528i which has averaged 19mpg over the last 3 years. Not to say I didn't get high 20's on long straight freeway, and teens around town. Hoping for 22mpg or better average on the X3 and will be happy. I do approx 60% highway.

MPG drops as soon as I start driving around town. Mileage sensitive to conditions with this car. I now have over 500 miles on her. |

Without a doubt. I love that drive. Though the stretch on the parks between Nenana and Fairbanks is FANTASTIC for fun driving. How long have you lived up there? |

Also, pay attention to the ethanol content at your filling station - and it may not be exactly what they tell you it is.
I picked up my 28i in March and recently took a road trip - 300 miles each way. I filled up before leaving (93 octane with 10% ethanol) and I got 26.0 mpg on the way down. On the way back, I didn't see any ethanol signs where I filled up and I got 29.0 mpg. Pretty much the same average speed and number of stops, etc. Interestingly, I completed the break-in period with the drive down and I got a chance to open it up a little before the drive home. So maybe the high RPMs helped the exhaust system breathe a little, maybe it was the actual fuel, or maybe efficiency improves after the engine breaks in. |

I average 21 mpg per 20 mpg on the computer and 23.2 on the I drive.
95% city strictly on Eco Pro Mode with AC and Auto Stop Start On My 2013 28i has 468 miles on it. So far a full tank and a half. About to fill her up tommorrw.
