n52t engine getting up to operating temp

Just recently got a 12 X3 28i with the N52T engine. Have driven it a few times and I have noticed that it takes a looooong time to get up to operating temp.
The guage needle goes up about Id say an 1\8 of an inch past the first line, then gets up to say 230, when doing an uphill climb, it went close to 250.
230 or so seems HIGH ?? 68K miles on it. In need of a new T Stat ????

The main question is WHY does it take so long to even move the needle ???
Like 10 minutes... My E46 M54 engine heat up very quickly !!

Is this normal operation ??? Like I said this vehicle is new to me so I am not that familiar with it yet. Let me know, thanks

Don’t confuse the oil temperature gauge with the actual engine temperature

Thanks KID... you are right !!! I am confusing the gauge. The gauge on dash to the right of the tach is the oil temp gauge, correct ???
I am new to my 12 x3 28i !!! I'm thinking this is the coolant temp gauge.
My bad.... so you must enter the OBC function to access coolant temp ????

My only , up till now , experience with BMW automotive is my 05 325iT E46, with M54 engine. Boy have I got a lot to learn !!!!
Ive never had a vehicle that did NOT have a visible temp gauge. Guess I better get to learning !!!

To NOT have a coolant temp gauge to constantly be in view is something I guess Ill have to learn to live with !!
