I just received a letter from BMW informing me that it has extended the warranty on the 28i engine VANOS Adjustment Units. Anybody know if these "Units" are the same as the bolt recall on the 35i or is the bolt part of the "Unit"?

Has anybody had a problem on their 28i with the VANOS?

It is for the same bolt problem.
For the ones outside the production range where the vast majority of bolt failures have occurred they extend the warranty as you are unlikely to have any problems. For engines in the production range where bolts are failing they will replace the bolts.

You should have very little to worry about
