Idrive failed?

My car has 983 miles on it. Turned it on today and the Idrive screen turned orange. The whole thing. Then it went black and showed nothing.

It appears that the functions still work like the radio, bluetooth phone, and parking sensor. But I can't see the nav or phone book.

Anyone else have this issue? I tried shutting the car off, locking it, unlocking and restarting, with no luck.

I would prefer to avoid a trip to the dealer if this is a one-off instance and others here have a fix. Thanks.

Try to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and then reconnect. Worth a try...

Your post reminded me of this thread:

This was the only time I remember reading something similar to yours. You could also try resetting the hard drive by holding in the power button for 30 seconds. Probably won't work, but its worth a shot.

So just hold down the engine start stop button for 30 seconds to reset the hard drive?

No, sorry, should have been more clear. Hold in the sound on/off button for 30 seconds.

I didn't drive the car yesterday. Started it up today and it worked fine. I cancelled my service appt and will make a new one if it happens again. I figured no point in taking it in if all they would say is "unable to duplicate customer concern."

Chalky White, has you Idrive failed anymore? My 2011 X3 was off all day last Saturday but the next morning it was fine. My dealer said they have never had an Idrive fail but after surfing the internet I can tell them I am not alone with this problem.

It hasn't failed again. I'm hoping it doesn't because I really don't want them to take apart my dash to put in a new one (if that's what they have to do).

That sounds good, I have a cross county road trip in a couple of weeks. I hope to be able to use the navigation on board but will bring a back up just in case. My first failure didn't happen until 15000 miles. Since then we have noticed the instrument cluster back lighting went off for a few minutes once and the auto headlamps cycle on and off on sunny days. These little bugs make me worry when I get a long way from home.
