2013 X3 M-Sport CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK

Anyone else have this issue? 2013 X3 3.5 M-Sport with paddle shifters, when pulling the plus paddle shifting from 1-2-3-4 under heavy load there is a THUD from the rear of the vehicle that you can hear and feel. This does NOT happen in "D" or "DS" mode but only when manually shifting and never unless there is a good load on the drivetrain. I have less than 300 miles on mine and dealer has just told me that "they all do that" which I do not believe at all.

I have the opportunity to return the vehicle to the dealer but really and truly like it so I'd like a resolution rather than a replacement. Any and all help appreciated.

Completely normal. Not too sure exactly what it is but all the N55 equiped engines have similar sounds under load. I think it has to do with the exhaust flap opening and closing. Mine does it too and I love it when it does.

Yeah it sounds exhaust related actually. This is something you can feel and hear??

If you're referring to the same exhaust boom I hear when shifting manually during acceleration, I love that sound. It got louder when I did the exhaust flap mod (by pulling out the plug that disables the exhaust flap). I'd recommend letting the engine break in a bit before making any determinations regarding this.

OK awesome! I feel so much better knowing that this is "normal" for this vehicle. Time to keep it and juice it!

Yep, exact same symptoms of what you described in your OP. Don't worry about it, it just part of the ultimate driving pleasure

I love that thud sound as the car goes through the gears. P.s. Mine does that too.

To get some insight into this noise it took me a trip to the dealer, a test drive with the service technician, the sales guy that sold me the car had to test drive another model to compare, and now, the place I should have started first gives the most conclusive recommendation. Thanks guys, I feel better--noise appears to be normal. Dealer did not know this by the way and when I took a test drive with the technician he said "wow, that sounds really bad." Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes.

At least I have a project to keep me busy this week--I've got my 21" wheels and new Michelins to put on, AC Schnitzer lowering springs, AC Schnitzer exhaust, and JB Stage 1 to install tomorrow, so good times coming...

I paid about $1100 shipped. No, not cat back, just the box and a couple of inches of pipe. I'm not in it for the power as it may make 4-8hp, I just LOVE the AC Schnitzer sound. Had many ACS parts on my last 7 BMW's and love the exhaust note.

JB for power...

I'm not sure, but is it not recommended to not use the paddles during break-in? With only 300 miles you might want to check with the dealer.

They had no problem with it on the test drive with a master tech from my local dealer. He basically said break in period is BS these days which I'm not really inclined to believe. He said give any new car ~300 miles of varying RPM city and highway driving then bang it as much as you want. The exceptions are the M cars and diesels which require a longer break in period.

Personally, I say go easy for 1,000 miles, change the oil, and drive like you want to. I have owned only BMW's with the exception of my first car, a Honda Accord, and have followed this procedure with every car without issue.

Funny thing I'm doing the same mods to my MINI sans the "21" inch rims of course Post pics, and please advise on the ride with the lowering springs - which I hear are manufactured by Eibach with specs supplied by ACS. How's the exhaust?

Haven't had time to do anything today, been crazy busy. Will have the exhaust on tomorrow sometime and I'll post pics and video as soon as possible. The lowering springs are likely manufactured by Eibach (thankfully not H&R) and are made to ACS specs. I have had ACS suspension in my E46 330, E46 M3, M-coupe, E70 X5 4.8, and E90 335D, and couldn't be more pleased with ride quality and handling.

Did you purchase through CEC? If so were the parts in stock, or did you have you have to wait for them to come from Germany?

Actually I am a distributor for AC Schnitzer out of Atlanta, GA. We buy through CEC as they are the only importer for ACS in the United States. I waited about 2 weeks for the parts to arrive--special ordered from Germany. AFAIK the exhaust and springs were the first in the US. So far, exhaust is on, springs will be next week. The exhaust sounds perfect for me, not too intrusive, barely noticeable at idle but nice and deep around 3,000-5,000 RPM. Interestingly the exhaust literally took less than 5 minutes to install and is the best-fitting, most perfectly centered systems I have ever seen, and we have installed literally hundreds of systems.

Sounds clips and video to follow soon.

Cool to know - so the parts are somewhat exclusive. I think my springs may be in but the exhaust wasn't ready when the springs shipped. Can't wait, I should have just bit the bullet and got the exhaust for the X3 at the same time as the MINI.

I have an idea of what your X3 will look like once complete. You are going to shock a lot of people in a good way These cars are infinitely mod-able AND under radar for enthusiasts at the moment. I think I am going to stick with the Breyton's for now, but I do have my eye on the Type VIII's

Can't wait to see/hear the video/sound clips
