Headlamp Range Control thumbwheel .....

.....rightmost on the lamp control panel, X3 Owner's Manual, Page 76, Item 8.

What does it control?

I think it's for manually fine tuning the angle of the headlight beam, to compensate for the effects of different passenger/cargo weight loads.

That's it RZ . If you have the Xenon's you don't have this control cause Xenon's self adjust to the right angle. Normal headlights don't self adjust and you have to turn the knob to adjust to the right height.

It has nothing to do with auto highbeams as that controller is on the top of the end of the turnsignal lever.

Yeah, sounds right. I had a Mazda 3 which had xenons, but it was a cheaper car so they weren't auto-leveling. I had a roller next to the headlight switch to adjust them manually instead. Sounds similar.

im too lazy to look manual, where is this thumbwheel, if its to the left of steering wheel on panel next to headlight switch, that would be the control for the dash/control display screen brightness/darkness

That's true, but cars without Xenon's have an extra thumbwheel to turn and it's positioned next to the one that controls brightness for the dash.

My apologies for starting this thread.
Yesterday, my wife accidentally left the parking lights on for a few hours in the garage. She said she thought she had turned on the high beams and she assumed the high beams would turn off. I referred to the Manual (big mistake). This morning she told me that our X3 doesn't have the Headlamp Range Control thumbwheel. We have xenons.
Good news, after a full year of ownership and 13K miles we finally know how to operate the headlamp controls.
