Yep, I use both all the time. They work well together, as soon as you touch the throttle the engine spins back to life and the brakes release.

On the x models, it should come standard except for the x1 I think.

Correct, the X1 has a manual hand brake . I really do not understand BMW's engineering as it takes up so much space. They really could have made the drivers arm rest and the center console better with the inclusion of the electronic parking brake. Oh well.

Mind you, my 2003 renault scenic had an automatic handbrake entirely. I didn't have to "release" it etc like I have to do with the X3. If I parked the car, the HB came on, and as soon as I applied power, the HB was off. A bit miffed still about that in fact, as I really took that feature for granted for years...

In the X3 if the handbrake is on and I put it in D and push the throttle the handbrake goes off automatically. You do have to apply it yourself though, unless the auto hold function is enabled, then it does that automatically as well.

I know its a little off-topic, but I was surprised to see the new F30/31 3-Series has a conventional mechanical handbrake rather than an electronic handbrake as in the F25 X3. Presumably the implication from this is that the new 3-Series therefore doesn't have the Auto Hold feature. For me, the auto-hold is one of those unexpected things I've really come to appreciate with the F25 X3.
