Road/wind noise?

Hi,

Am thinking of buying the X3 2.8 once it gets the turbo four in MY 2013(end of this year). How is the new X3 in terms of wind/road noise? I read that the new 3-series(F30) has less sound insulation than E90, so was wondering if BMW did the same thing with the new X3. I drive on California's crappy concrete highways and even with my camry i can still hear tire noise(or is it air turbulence under the chassis).

Thanks to all for the input.

Actually, 2013 model year production of has already begun, including the turbo-4 28i. So far, 2013 X3's appear to be embargoed in SC, awaiting EPA/CARB approval. It may be a few weeks before anyone can comment on wind/road noise for 2013s.

As to MY 2011 and 2012, most of of us see (hear) no issue, some have had problems that have been resolved by BMW, and some have ongoing problems.

EPA/CARB approvals appear to be resolved as of today, got notice from my CA for PCD delivery of my X3 28i on 4/26. They offered only 1 date and said it was then or nothing....apparently they are severely backlogged with PCD requests, so feel fortunate that I got a date. Had been trying to get a date previously but was told they could NOT schedule that until EPA/CARB approvals had been obtained, so it appears that is now done.

I'll be driving back from SC to TX, so I'll know pretty quickly if there are any noise issues, but I really don't expect that to be a problem.

More to come on 4/26!!!

My 35i with the 245/50R18 Pirelli P7 Cinturatos is very quiet on the road. Inside Line typically does sound measurements at highway cruising speed for all the vehicles they test, so you might check there for a more scientific comparison.

You missed the traffic/external noise...my 2012 28i has that problem, only way to ignore is turn up the volume. It's the insulation on the doors/windows...they reduced to keep the curb weight low...same as the F30.

Better you test drive a 2012 model on the same road that you frequently travel and compare.

+1

Do two or three test drives if you can and dedicate one of them to noises inside the car: road, wind ,traffic and also rattles-squeaks.

I think tires make a big difference. Now on Pirelli P Zero and they are much less noisy than my winter Dunlop Sport 3D have been.

Wind noise not an issue. Recently personally certified to about 140 mph.

I agree. My winter non-rft Michelins were much quieter than OEM rft Dunlops .

You are lucky not having a wind noise issue.

This is good advice, but needs some context. If you're a previous luxury car owner, you may notice that the X3 isn't as quiet as your previous car. For me, I came from a 2007 Honda Fit and the difference was night and day. I'm astonished at how quiet my 28i is and really don't notice road or wind noise much at all. Only time its really noticeable for me is when I'm at highway speed, > 55mph/90kph.

This is an area where YMMV a lot. You can search for previous threads on the topic and the response is all over the map.

My 2012 28i is very quiet in traffic, on the highway and in windy conditions. I've been driving BMW products for the past 25 years and my X3 is the most quiet.

I think it's fine. A bit louder than the 330i I had last, maybe. It's an SUV, though, so I expect that. I've had passengers in my car on two occasions now who chimed in with, "Wow, this is a really quiet car."

Ordered my AW 35 on March 29. Production ended 4-5. CA emailed me yesterday that car should be in today. Does not seem to be a delay here !
