Ok, after getting new shoulder parts installed a year ago, I'm ready to get back into kayaking. Went out to the river yesterday and couldn't figure out a way to securely lock the car with the electronic fob inside (I have the convenience package). Had to put the fob into a drybag that by chance, was in my gear bag. No doubt I'll forget to bring it one of these days - then what? Pretty sure it won't like a couple hours in the water too much. Ideas?

i don't know... i sent mine through the washer and dryer and it's working ok. ;-)

Not sure if this would work as I don't have the convenience package.

You could try removing the valet key from the electronic key fob then put the key fob somewhere secure in your car. Next lock the car with the button on the center console then lock the driver's side door with the valet key. The valet key should be safe to take with you since it's just metal and plastic, just remember not to drop it in the water!

the fob will be fine in a moist environment. u can throw it in the washing machine and when the load is done the fob works perfectly. waterproof seals are built in just in case situations like that occur.

Remove key from fob, use key to lock fob inside glove compartment, use key to lock all doors from outside the car. works with the car running with the fob inserted into its slot as well.

Here in Texas we get envelopes that you put a toll tag into when you don't want it picked up by the sensors.

Hertz uses little boxes for their Northeast cars to block the EZ-Pass signal if you don't want to use it.

Find something like this and throw in the fob.

I am not willing to test the water-tight idea.

If you do manage to lock the fob inside then you may not be able to unlock your X3 later. Lock yourself in the car and see if someone can use Comfort Access to unlock the car from outside. It shouldn't work. If it does, then what's to stop someone from driving off with your X3 (which your insurance company will say that you have just left the keys in) while you're out kayaking?

The Valet key ideas could well be the way to go.
