Leave 'em alone. The crash-active headrests on the front seats have a bit more to them then is obvious, including pyrotechnics and preloaded tension springs.
From a BMW Service training document: "The front seats are equipped with crash-active head restraints. These head restraints feature a pyrotechnic actuator that epitomizes the distance and height of the restraint in relation to the head in the event of a rear-end collision of sufficient force. This reduces the stress in the region of the cervical spine during a rear-end collision." "The head restraints are adjusted via preloaded tension springs. If the ACSM detects a rear-end collision, the pyrotechnic actuators are activated and the preloaded tension springs are released." "Seat or head restraint covers or accessories for mounting on the head restraint that could reduce the protective effect must not be used." |
