17" on a 35d - anyone done it?

In moving to an F25 I'm looking at an xDrive35d - as I have a set of winters on 17" wheels can anyone tell me if they should fit or not? (I ask as they don't on an E83 - the brakes are too big)

I asked this question on here a while back. I also asked my dealership as I have a set of 17's for my 5 Series. I got the following reply:

Quote:
Hi StumblingTrout,

Hope you are well.

I have had a response from my technical team and I’ve cut and pasted it below.

The approved winter wheel and tyre combination for the customer’s F11 is a different size to that fitted on the F25 so therefore is not compatible I’m afraid. We have had past issues with non-approved tyre sizes on X3 vehicles causing damage to the all-wheel drive system which is worth highlighting.

Sorry it’s not the answer you wanted, but better to find out now than cause damage I guess.

Kind regards

The 35i and 35d both share larger brake diameter specs than the 30d, 20d, 18d, 28i, and 20i.

The smallest wheel that will fit the 35i and 35d is an 18".

Are you sure? I found some specs online which show the X3 35d as having slighter smaller front brake discs than a 530d and the same size rears. I have 17" winters on my 530d. Unless the figures I found are wrong and they are bigger discs...

Thanks - I've had the issues they're talking about with my current X3, it's the transfer box that's affected - the tyres I've got are star marked OEM spec Alpins on X5 wheels and have had no issues on either of my X3s.

That's what I thought.

stumblingtrout, where are you in the UK? I'd be interested to know when you get it if your 5 series wheels fit.

I didn't explain myself. I am referring to X3 models only--not the 5.

I have an X3 35I and used winter tires with 17inches wheels with no problems. I think it all depends on the wheels you select TireRack knows about it and the website will only offer you wheels that are compatible.
You obviously need to worry about the tire size so that the circumference is equal to the ones of 18 or 19 inches options.

I was saying that the 5 Series (530d) has larger brakes than even the X3 35d - and I can fit 17" rims on my 530d - ergo they'll fit on the X3 (size wise that is, I can't comment on the offset, PCD etc)

Looks like the size you'll need for an X335dMS is 225/60/17, in order to keep the correct rolling radius. I think you can get star rated run flats in that size as it's offered as a winter tyre size for the X3 30d.

Which wheels have you got?

Sounds good - I'll watch with interest if you can get 17s onto the X3 from that detail

My winters are 235/55/17 so close enough to 225/60/17. For me it's the size and offset which matter as I've a set of 17" M+S tyres as well for rally use.

I have a 30D. I put 17 inch 305's Winter wheels on, they fitted fine. (As winter wheels they were amazing)

The tyre noise reduced considerably and the ride was much smoother.

If I could I would replace the staggered 19 inch summer wheels for 17 inch wheels at a reasonable cost I would, but the cost of yet another set of wheels isn't realistic.

Just coming back to this as I'm getting closer to actually buying one

The brake disc, caliper and caliper carrier are all the same for EU on all models. So if a 17" will fit a 18d then it will fit a 35d.

RealOEM has all the details.

I'm still looking for reassurance so has anyone with a 35d done this yet?

Ranger,

17's aren't an approved size for the 35d even though they will fit. You will need to check with your insurance company that they will provide cover as in the event of an accident they may choose to meet their 3rd party liabilities only rather than the full amount of the claim unless declared and approved.

Thanks for that - will investigate further.

Do you have a list of recommended sizes from your manual by any chance?

To quote my dealer:

Below are the options available for Winter wheels on F25 X3 (this is based on vehicle details with no VIN available so would need to be confirmed once the vehicle has been allocated one).

1. 18” 308 wheels with W210 Pirelli Sotto Zero tyres 245/50R18 100H.

2. 19” 309 wheels with W240 Pirelli Sotto Zero tyres 245/45R19 102V front and 275/40R19 105V rear.

3. 18” 307 wheels with Pirelli W210 Sotto Zero tyres 245/50R18 100H.

So I would guess 245/50/18 is your best bet?
