Warm up time?

Seems like my 2011 X3 2.8 is taking a very long time to warm up. Today was 40 deg F and it took nearly 15 minutes before the needle would move and close to 30 minutes before it got slightly shy of vertical. How does this compare with others?

Thanks!

Mine takes like 8 miles to get fully warmed up.

Temperature gauge is oil temp, not water. Oil temps will rise slower. 8 miles is about what it takes for mine, too.

i haven't clocked the mileage, but it is clear that oil temp rises more slowly than the coolant temp measured on my previous vehicles.

Seems longer than what mine took, but warm up time seems dependent on traffic and driving style. Driving at similar temps, the needle starts to move on my much sooner -- perhaps three miles in? On some colder days it never reached the typical "near vertical" position.

Of course it is. In cold weather and driving really carefully and not more than 50 mph I can do almost 20 minutes on flat and empty country roads before the needle is vertical.

If you want the oil temp to rise faster you could also drive in Sport mode (w/ drivetrain enabled) or Sport+, the temp rises faster than Normal mode even with the same driving style.

The idea is to drive gently until the oil is up to working temperatures.

You're suggestion, while true that it will increase the oil temperature faster, is not really what people should be doing for the sake of mechanical longevity. That is to say, pushing the car harder when it is not warmed up can damage engine/drivetrain parts and/or increase wear on those parts.

If people cant wait for their engine to get fully warmed up, my advice to you is to be a jack rabbit on the road, kickdown on every acceleration. Be sure that you are in sport+ and while on wait on the red light, put your on park or neutral then make your engine roar by pressing on the gas!

Don't blame me if anything goes wrong, I'm just sayin
