X3's Armpit-Egg Carton Material
Sorry for the crude description but can any of you comment on the material that is the socket (tire/wheel armpit) where the tire is at? The material appears to look similar to an egg carton. I was concerned about this type of material around the tires where it would get wet/muddy/dirty. I imagine that this type of material cannot be wiped off (like plastic) but would rather absorb moisture.

BMW puts this in the rear wheel wells. I have it in my E90 and X5 (rear only). I've always assumed it is for insulation of some sort, either sound or heat or both. If you're worried about cleaning it, don't be - it is easy enough to clean with a strong spray of water or a soft brush. It is very durable.
