Question New deductible for tire warranty - still make sense (analysis included)?

I took delivery of my X3 2.8 Friday and signed up for the tire warranty. Something I didn't know is that as of 12/1/11, they have added a $50 deductible in my state (I think per tire).

I did the math - they're charging me for $1347 for a 5 year warranty. Costco charges $240 for the tire + installation + tax: (Bridgestone-Dueler H/L 400). To just breakeven, I would have to get 7+ tires replaced. Here's how much I save, depending on how many tires I have issues with:

4 flats, I lose $: -$586
5 flats, I lose $: -$396
6 flats, I lose $: -$206
7 flats, I lose $: -$16
8 flats, I make $: $173
9 flats, I make $: $363
10 flats, I make $: $553
11 flats, I make $: $743
12 flats, I make $: $934

Summary: If I average 1 flat/year, I'll have lost $400 doing this. If I get 2 flats/year, I'll have made $500.

My intuition says I'm going to probably not going to have more than 1 flat a year, so I'm thinking about canceling it. What do you guys think?

Thanks
PB2

P.S. Happy to share my spreadsheet with anyone that wants to do this on their own.
P.P.S. I live in the Boston area. My last car was not a run flat, but I had it for 8 years and think I only got a flat once.

I would cancel if you're allowed to. I have 20years driving experience and have driven all kinds of roads. Have had 3 flats during those years. All of them due to a penetrating nail or something making a small hole. Easy to repair by just plugging the hole. Max 30-40$ for each flat. Lasts the lifetime of the tire.

To be honest, I think that kind of deal is a robbery.

Thanks for the advice. The only reason I'm even considering it is because these are run flat tires. I've heard they are more likely to get flats and that the flats are usually non-reparable.

I can cancel and think I will...

I drive an average amount of miles per year in the midwest and I have never had a flat with the Bridgestone RFTs on an older 328i or the new Pirelli RFTs on the X3. You should also consider the time value of money and if you were to finance these sort of add ons with your vehicle purchase. For me I would rather spend/save the money.

My latest flat tire was 6 months ago during a 3 day testdrive with a dealer's 2011 X3 wich had runflats. I could drive to a repairshop and the puncture was easy to repair. Took 30mins and 70$. Expensive since it was a holiday.

Isn't that a tire AND wheel warranty? I thought that's what they try to sell you after the deal is done. I didn't know it was just the tire warranty.

I was able to get the tire and wheel warranty for $849. Considering this price and that the wheels are 50 profiles, I thought that it was well worth the cost.

I think that is alot of your hard earn cash to put out, we repair a average of 6-10 flat repairs a day. The only time the tire needs replacing is if the repair (tire plug) is close to the sidewall of the tire or the customer drove the tire low on air and compromised the sidewall of the tire (the inner sidewall of the tire breaks down from running low on air pressure, and we find loads of shredded rubber inside the tire). As far as run flats go they can be plugged, the run flat has stiffer sidwalls so the tire doesn't go completely flat when it's low or out of air. Just got my first flat on my 07 corvette which has run flat tires and we plugged it (first flat in 10yrs. I'm 54 yrs. old), and I probably could of avoided the incident if I didn't run the car close to the side of the left hand lane and pick up some garbage on the side of the road, TPMS sensor went off and I was 10 miles from my shop, got it repaired and made my appt. to test drive the 2012 x3 35i..... It was a great end to a saturday...

Yes, it's a tire and wheel warranty. I've never had to replace a wheel in my life (unless the car was in an accident, in which case the insurance company covered it). So I don't place much value on that...

I've hit a couple potholes covered in rain water and at night that i thought for sure would have damaged my 20" alloy wheels let alone blow out my tire but everything seems ok. So I wonder how much force would it take to damage the X3's 19" wheels and/or tires. I hate those tire/wheel protection packages.....seems like an easy way for the dealer to make even more $$.

Interesting... My X3 only has 17" wheels. I assume the bigger the wheel, the more likely they're damaged by potholes?

is this deductable only if you sign the tire protection plan on delivery after 12/1 or is it somehow retroactive (which wouldn't make sense since its a signed contract)....
