CIC software (Multimedia/telephone) update

Hi, I just picked up a 2012 Xdrive28i from a neighbor and am trying to get as many things as I can up to date on it (software-wise, car seems mechanically great).

I have a CIC with Navigation system professional with these current software revisions:

Multimedia: MX-003.004.031
Telephone: TX-003.004.031

I couldn't find updates to them anywhere. BMW's own site just says "An error has occurred. Please try again later." when I type in my VIN. If anyone has updated files they can share, please let me know!

Also, navigation updates or any others I can perform myself, please share! Thanks in advance!

I have a 2011 and upgraded mine with UPD01008.bin downloaded from BMW a while ago. I get the same error as you when I check for updates now.

Attached pdf has the version info.
Readme_UPD01008_ENG.pdf

Here's the binary, remove .pdf from the filename.
UPD01008.bin.pdf

Besides a newer map, you can do some coding to change some of the characteristics of the vehicle.

Awesome! Thank you so much for posting this! I wonder if this was the end of the line for updates. I haven't seen anything mentioned about any newer revision. Hopefully this will improve the bluetooth connection a bit. Thanks again!

No problem...I'm guessing the last firmware update for CIC was in 2014 since the pdf has a timestamp of 2014 as well as the last phone listed is a iphone 5 & galaxy 4. I pulled the file from BMW in early 2019.

drag the bin file to an empty USB drive, plug it in and wait till the car settles after starting up about 2-3 mins.
Then go into settings and click on software update, the USB should be plugged into the car prior to starting the car. It will detect the update and it should load the new software to the car. Takes about 2-3 mins max.

This is not a head-unit update but a combox update to support newer phones and fix some bluetooth glitches.

Can you please let me know your steps? I have tried this and can't get it to work. Here's what I have done:

Formatted USB to FAT32
Drag the file you posted from downloads to the USB drive.
Changed the .bin.pdf to just .bin
put the USB in the glovebox, waited until Software update screen asked to update via Teleservice or USB
Chose USB
Idrive stated the was no software on the usb

After this, I thought about when I updated my maps....the file you posted is compressed when I downloaded it....so now, I take the USB back inside and extract the files to the root of the USB. Took it back out to the X3 and exactly the same thing as before....no update

EDIT: I downloaded again ….didn’t do anything too the file except take off .pdf……update can only be done via the armrest USB…that’s where i was messing up…I was inserting into glovebox

Glovebox USB is for the Map/Navigation Updates.

Armrest USB is for the BMW Software Update. It says on the update page to use the armrest audio USB for update.

Thanks heaps for the update mate! I have a 2012 X3 and have been looking for a while how to get the software update as the official BMW site doesn't work anymore.
My main issue was my bluetooth songs just showing as unknown and since the update that is no longer the case so thanks heaps for that!

Is there any way to modify this *.bin uodate file, to make custom changes, like disable Auto Start/stop and etc.?

Even if you could modify the .bin file (which you can't without the source code and proper compiler) it has nothing to do with the auto start/stop Use e-sys to disable it.

Alternatively, besides pungo's suggestion, you could also code this function on/off using Bimmercode if you're not quite comfortable enough to run E-sys (I'm still new to the BMW coding ecosystem myself and decided to stick to Bimmercode until I learn a bit more about E-sys)

Hi, I bought a X3 F25 2011 in december with the original maps.

I have tried to upgraded the CIC with UPD01008.bin method described above without sucess. I used a FAT32/32GB USB in the armrest but nothing happens. I have also tried with a number of other USBs with the same result.
I know that BMW is USB sensitive and wonder if it is any specific brand that is known to work?

First it's not the armrest, its the glovebox USB port.
Second, you must go into the car settings menu and click on Software Update.

My first task is to update the Combox. The secont will be the Maps.

In your Post #8 you state:

Glovebox USB is for the Map/Navigation Updates.

Armrest USB is for the BMW Software Update. It says on the update page to use the armrest audio USB for update.

I have tried both USB connectors without success. I forgot to mention that i also used the SW update menu.

I think I've tried all the variations:
  • Start the Navigator first and then insert the USB
  • Plug in the USB and then Start the Navigator
  • I have done this in both the armrest and the glove compartment.
  • But nothing works.

Any more options? Could it be something wrong with the combox? Is it possible to retrofit a later Combox version?

We’re you sure to delete the .bin off of the file?

Same situation here. I have tried a number of USB sticks according to recommendations without success.
It is the Combox that is supposed to detect the UPD01008.bin file on the USB stick.
I bought a used Combox on Ebay that is produced 2 years latar than my existing one and hopefully it will solve the upgrade.

You probably have "show filename extensions" turned off

This is from the owners manual belonging to my X3 F25 2011:

Update software via USB.

Updating may only be done when the car is stationary.
  1. Save the file with the updated software in the main folder of a USB stick.
  2. Connect the USB stick to the USB audio interface in the center armrest. It is not possible to update the software via the USB interface in glove compartment.
