SQ5, answer from BMW

Not that we would ever see these in the US but now that Audi announced a pretty amazing diesel SQ5 that is quicker than the X3 35i and gets much better MPG I wonder if we will see a BMW M performance diesel X3.

I think I would trade in my 35i for it, might even trade it in for the Audi if they bring it to the US.

Yeah, I was just reading about it. Pretty amazing looking car with serious performance / efficiency credentials. I doubt they will bring it over, given that they are supposedly launching a "non-S" 3.0 tdi with this 2013 refresh. There is a hope for a fuel-burning SQ5 to launch here with the S4/S5 engine and DCT, however and i would still take that over a 35i.

The GLK gets a 2.0L diesel for 2013 too.

It's only a matter of time before BMW "gets with the program".

Personally I'd be pissed if BMW releases a diesel in 2013 or 2014 (in North America) as I bought the 35i because a diesel was not available here. I really wanted a diesel.

Well the S4 basically matches the performance of a 335xi and they are priced about the same loaded (in the US at least). The S4 is sportier though (especially seats) and I would also probably take that, but I still think the X3 looks more aggressive than even the SQ5, I really love the looks of the X3, the Q5 needs a more rigid look, its too smooth. Plus as I have learned with my C63, never take the BMW 4 year 50K mile maintenance for granted! I paid $1500 for a Mercedes maintenance package (covers 4 service visits, last one being at 40K miles) and doesn't include any recommeneded services (brake fluid, transmission fluid at 39K miles...) I figure adding those in its around $2200, and that doesn't include brakes! now on a SUV that might just mean pads but if rotors also need to be done, now its a much bigger difference, and on a car like the C63, brakes are $5K, meaning that the cost is really around $7K more than a M3 because all thats included with the BMW. I am guessing the SQ5 has high performance brakes where the rotors and pads will both be replaced before 50K miles.

Just something everyone should keep in mind when shopping brands, no one offers a plan that covers brakes and basically everything but tires for 50K miles and don't underestimate the cost of that.

great points on the maintenance, i fully agree. I don't fully agree that the S4=335i xdrive, I think Audi S slots a little bit above (performance and cost wise) than 335i models. I think the M-performance lineup will better compete with the Audi S cars.

Really don't understand all the fuss the motoring media is making about this SQ5. Its headline act is the engine which is a twin-turbo version of its 3.0 litre diesel putting out 230 kW/650 Nm. So what, BMW's own twin-turbo diesel has been around for a while now (and we now have the triple-turbo diesel for the X5 & X6), and in the X3 35d it puts out 230 kW/630 Nm.

The 35d is good! Still waiting for mine though. Once people in the States get over their prejudices concerning diesel, they will realize how much better it is.

Nice as the 35i is, I would have never purchased it when the diesel is available.
The economy and torque figures speak for themselves.

This makes me a very sad panda...

Really sucks that a 30+ mpg option is available outside the US, but not within. I love my 28i, but really wish a diesel had been an available option. I can only hope BMW introduces one by MY2015 so I can swap for one at the end of my lease.

That SQ5 is just Audi catching up with the X3 35d.
